Before their trip to London, the Cleveland Browns announced rookie QB Dillon Gabriel as their starter. With the shuffle, veteran Joe Flacco took the backup role, but fellow rookie Shedeur Sanders remained the third string. But while the latter is unable to climb up the depth chart, he did capture everyone’s attention in Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Just hours before the Week 5 game tipoff in London, Browns analyst Tont Grossi shared a picture of Shedeur Sanders being featured in the NFL’s promotion of “The official cap of NFL sidelines.” Grossi captioned his thoughts, “Tottenham didn’t get the memo about who’s starting at QB for Browns.”

While the analyst’s confusion is understandable since the new Browns starter this week is Dillon Gabriel. But it is hard to ignore what Sanders brings to the table: sales.

The 144th pick’s popularity has continuously surged and brought profits for the league and the Browns. The biggest example of how he moved the needle was his jersey sales right after he was drafted. Sanders became the only fifth-round pick this year to get into the top-10. For the record, he was first in total jersey sales after toppling the first overall pick and fellow Colorado alum Travis Hunter. In contrast, Gabriel’s jersey did not even crack the top 10.

So, we can see why Sanders was the face for the NFL’s promotion in London despite still being stuck as QB3. Alongside him, Hunter was also present on the bulletin board. Here is the advertisement:

“Tottenham didn’t get the memo about who’s starting at QB for Browns.” Does this mean Sanders is starting against the Minnesota Vikings?

However, the former Colorado quarterback was seen doing some drills with the Browns’ starting lineup during the pre-game warmups, where the young QB showed elite accuracy. That brief on-field glimpse wasn’t just a random warmup. It came right after some buzz about what the Browns actually have planned for him.

Yesterday, insider Ian Rapoport released a report about the Browns’ plans with the quarterback room. The insider revealed that it’s because they only want to bring Sanders under center after curating a specialized plan for his skill set. “When he does play, it would be with a full week of practice and a game plan built for him,” wrote Rapoport.

For now, Sanders is leading the scout team after post-game practices. But it’s not hard to understand why questions about his role in the Browns roster are popping up every other day.

For one, the questions regarding Sanders’ debut might have also come after he gave literally silent responses in regards to Gabriel being named the QB1. But what many believed was attitude, was Sanders simply trying to get more hate after being called a loudmouth. Before the London game, where Gabriel would become the first NFL rookie QB to debut in an international game, Sanders gave him a shout-out to show his support. He took to his Instagram and shared a picture of them practicing together with a one-word message: “#dawgs”

The Browns aren’t rushing Sanders’ development; instead, they are giving him time to grow. The bottom line is, Rapoport expects him to get into action before the season ends. As of now, the Colorado alum appears to be accepting things, which only bodes well for the team in the long run.
