The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were already reeling with injuries in their 24-9 loss to the Detroit Lions. However, the Buccaneers’ quarterback Baker Mayfield believes that more issues stopped the team from dominating.

Mayfield pointed out the officiating mistakes during the game. “Third-down defensive holding call that wasn’t called, also still pretty da-n confused about the double review,” he said about the mistakes during the postgame presser.

The “double review” likely took place early in the fourth quarter, when tight end Cade Otton caught a fourth-down pass just short of the first-down and attempted for it. At first, the refs ruled he made it, but after the Lions challenged, they reviewed again. Initially, the call stood, but after a second look, the official said Otton came up short, giving the Lions the ball.

“A lot of things in that game that were a little questionable. Lot of frustration at the end of that, might be displaced onto John Hussey in the moment. I work my a– off and put a lot into this game, so when things that I don’t see (as) fair, I’m going to let somebody know. That’s good, bad, indifferent.”

However, the QB admitted that the team needs to better in the next game. There were several instances where Mayfield missed the WRs for passes. Not to mention, the Bucs’ wide receiver Mike Evans, who had just returned to the game after his injury, sustained another scary one.

While catching a deep pass from the QB, he fell down in the wrong way and hurt his shoulder. Evans stayed down in pain until help arrived. As per NFL insider Ari Meirov, Evans may have suffered a broken collarbone. The fear around his injury is that it’s a season-ending one.

This won’t be good news for the roster. “They (Lions) are a tough matchup for every team right now. We know about the loud crowd,” head coach Todd Bowles said of the game. “We just didn’t execute, but they played a very good game.”

While injuries and these calls may have played a part in stopping the Bucs, there’s also another fact that the Lions were phenomenal, and that too on both sides of the ball.

Jahmyr Gibbs stole the spotlight in the game vs. the Bucs

The running back Jahmyr Gibbs had one of his best performances in the game against the Bucs. He had 218 yards and two rushing touchdowns.

“It was huge. You felt like this was coming,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said of Gibbs. “You felt like this has been building, and as he gets in better shape and starts getting his feet under him and starts getting a feel of it – starts breaking some tackles.”

This performance wasn’t surprising to the coach or the quarterback, Jared Goff. Both admitted that they all saw it coming. Gibbs played a crucial role in breaking down the Buccaneers’ defense and elevating the Lions. His scrimmage yards are the most by a Lions player since Hall of Famer Calvin Johnson racked up 329 yards in 2013, as per Next Gen Stats.

Despite some of his best performances in the past, he had yet to surpass 100 rushing yards or 110 total yards in a single game this year. That drought has finally ended in Week 7.

As for the Bucs, the team will look at how things went wrong for them.
