Essentials Inside The Story

  • The GM addressed the speculation around Evans’ exit.
  • Money wasn’t the main reason behind the decision.
  • New details help explain why he moved.

Speculation over Mike Evans’ departure from Tampa Bay has run rampant, but the team’s GM just set the record straight. ESPN’s Jenna Laine shared new comments that shed light on the factors behind his move to the San Francisco 49ers.

“I feel pretty strongly that — I’ve seen that theory — but that’s not it. A lot of people were frustrated, and Mike was frustrated, as competitive as he is, but nothing was ever directed,” Licht said.

Licht addressed one of the biggest talking points surrounding Evans’ departure, whether internal frustration played a role. That speculation largely came from Tampa Bay’s tough loss to the Atlanta Falcons. In that game, the Buccaneers gave up a 14-point lead as defensive struggles allowed Atlanta to complete the comeback late.

Moments like that often lead to frustration inside a locker room, and many assumed it may have influenced Evans’ decision. But Licht pushed back on that idea. He explained that emotional reactions in close losses are normal across the league. Players and coaches show frustration in the moment, but those feelings don’t always carry into long-term decisions.

Licht even pointed out that head coach Todd Bowles was likely the most frustrated person after that loss. Still, he indicated that no issue between Bowles and Evans contributed to the exit.

With that rumor addressed, attention shifted to what actually led Evans to leave. Another update from Tampa Bay Times reporter Rick Stroud added further context.

“I feel like we did everything we could. I had a lot of talks with Mike about that,” Licht said.

Licht said the Buccaneers’ offer was actually higher than what Evans chose elsewhere, suggesting that money was not the main factor behind his decision.

Losing a player of Evans’ caliber, the only one in NFL history to start a career with eleven straight 1,000-yard seasons, is a massive blow, which is why his departure felt so emotional for the franchise. With the rumors of internal conflict dismissed, the focus shifts to what truly pulled Evans toward San Francisco.

Mike Evans chose a new challenge over a bigger contract

Despite getting a better financial offer from Tampa Bay, Evans decided to move on.

The San Francisco 49ers signed him to a three-year deal, adding a proven No. 1 receiver to their offense. After spending 12 seasons with the Buccaneers, Evans felt the timing was right for a fresh start.

A big part of that decision was the system in San Francisco. Evans has previously expressed admiration for head coach Kyle Shanahan’s offense and believed it would suit his playing style well.

Licht acknowledged that mindset while reflecting on Evans’ decision, Tampa Bay Times reporter Rick Stroud posted the update on X.

“I don’t feel betrayed. He earned the right to make the decision… he loves this team. He loves everything about it… I think he wanted a new challenge,” Licht said.

He was also influenced by the people already in the team. Tight end George Kittle reportedly played a key role in recruiting him, making the move easier for Evans.

For Evans, joining the 49ers also meant stepping onto a perennial contender. The team’s consistent deep postseason runs offered him a clear shot at competing for another championship, a key factor at this stage of his career.

Evans also joins an offense that already features several proven weapons, including Kittle and other playmakers, giving him a real chance to produce at a high level while competing for a title.
