Not many QBs in the NFL have ascended at the same pace as C.J. Stroud. The former OSU QB stepped into the big league, took his team to the playoffs, and even got elected to the Pro Bowl games. That’s a massive achievement from the quarterback standpoint, and the Houston Texans have been molding him behind the scenes so that he can reach this feat.

Besides this, he broke multiple rookie records along the way. Now, the signal-caller is finding people comparing his situation to Tom Brady’s rookie years. The Texans’ CB Steve Nelson showed up on the NFL Network show and talked to the host about what’s happening with C.J. Stroud and the Houston Texans. The cornerback returned in time and realized that the Texans had it in them to make it to the playoffs.

Steve Nelson’s unwavering faith in C.J. Stroud

Nelson was asked about when he learned that the Texans were a playoff-worthy team. For him, the blowout 37-17 win against the Jacksonville Jaguars affirmed Nelson’s confidence in the team. The veteran praised Stroud for his confidence, leadership, and playmaking skills. “Big playmaking ability, that’s what sets him apart,” said Nelson of Stroud.

The conversation was interesting when the host brought up Pats’ new documentary, The Dynasty. The host then started comparing C.J. Stroud’s and Tom Brady’s situations as rookies. He highlighted how the Patriots players pressured the rookie TB12 to push him to do his best on the SNF and asked Nelson if the Texans did the same to Stroud.

“Oh Yeah, most definitely man. CJ, coming in during camp, man, you know we as veterans, you know, we try to, you know, give him uh, throw everything at him, you know, because we ultimately knew that was going to help him out and help our team,” said Nelson.

He also added, “Once he gets to the real competition you know, he would already be prepared, see all the coverages and whatnot so, we definitely play the role myself including just helping out whenever we could as veterans, you know, just giving him tips, let him know where he could improve and uh, you can see he definitely took that and ran with it.”

C.J. Stroud to the top

Nelson’s statement would make more sense if we take a trip back in time. In the 2023 regular season, Stroud became the only rookie QB with 450+ passing yards and 5 TDs in a single game. In the first two rookie games, he had 626 passing yards with no interceptions. Talk about accuracy!

Also, he extended that lead when he had 900+ passing yards and no interceptions in his first three rookie games. Even Patrick Mahomes doesn’t have 450+ yards and 5TDs in a single game!
