The story around Jaguars’ first overall pick, Travis Hunter, has flipped fast over the past week. After recently impressing coaches and teammates at the team’s rookie minicamp, Hunter has found himself at the center of criticism. It all started when a few clips from his OTAs went viral. The internet was quick to pass judgment on his play style, attitude, and skills, based on 10-15 seconds of footage. And now, the Jaguars’ rookie is once again facing backlash, this time for something completely out of his control.
So why is the internet mad at Travis Hunter again? Well… not exactly at Hunter, but at Fox. During the NFL’s Spring League Meeting on Tuesday, the league officially announced that flag football will be part of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Even cooler? All 32 franchise owners unanimously voted in favor of letting NFL players take part in it. But then Fox NFL stirred the pot.
On its official Instagram page, they dropped a ‘dream team’ lineup for Olympic flag football, put together by reporter Greg Auman. And Travis Hunter was listed as a defensive back. The internet wasn’t having it. People started questioning how Fox could include someone who hasn’t even played a single snap in the NFL yet.

Now, to be fair, Hunter’s potential is through the roof. He was one of the most electric two-way players in college football and has already turned heads at rookie minicamp. Even Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence had some high praise for him after OTAs, saying, “He’s got a lot of juice. A lot of energy. I love it. Good energy… High motor.” But the netizens on X were recently calling out Travis for not being serious at the team’s OTAs after a short clip of the rookie made rounds on the internet. In the video, Hunter could be seen doing a little dance move on the gridiron.
While the internet bashed the Colorado alum for that, the team’s OC Grant Udinski had a completely different take. “It’s been a lot of fun. I’m sure you guys see it, him out here, the dancing at practice, the fun, the love of the game. That’s one of the cool things about not just him but all the guys we brought in, they’re guys that love football,” Udinski shared.
And now, once again, the criticism is pouring in after Fox NFL dropped its lineup.
What’s your perspective on:
Does Travis Hunter deserve a spot on Fox's dream team without an NFL snap under his belt?

It’s interesting how quickly narratives can shift in the NFL. Just a few days ago, the internet was full of praise for the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner. But now, as the Jaguars’ QB is receiving the kind of attention a high-round pick usually gets, some fans have started to criticize him. “Travis should not be on that team; he hasn’t played a snap in the NFL,” a comment read on Fox’s post.

Greg Auman’s dream lineup also features Jayden Daniels, Cowboys’ Micah Parsons, and Cincinnati’s Ja’Marr Chase. While some of the picks were getting love, the internet is of the view that Hunter does not deserve a place in this yet. “Y’all just had to include Hunter like they ain’t got other established and proven DBs,” another comment read. Another user commented, “Travis hasn’t even touched the field yet, bruh.” Well, he isn’t wrong, but he is just a rookie right now.
One fan pointed out that they’d rather have a veteran on the dream lineup than Hunter: “Any vet over Travis, bro, he hasn’t played a single snap.” Another echoed a similar sentiment, writing, “Why would you have Hunter? When you have plenty of proven guys who are better than him.” Auman’s lineup also features Vikings WR Justin Jefferson, who has been an ambassador for flag football since 2023. Jefferson was also present at the spring meeting. “To be honest, I’m just at a loss for words. Now that we’re, you know, expanding the game and going more global… It’s pretty cool,” Justin shared as he took the podium.
Anyway, when it comes to Hunter’s critics, there are still about three years until the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, plenty of time for him to prove them wrong.
