The New England Patriots have been having a pretty rotten season so far, there’s no denying. The opening win against the Cincinnati Bengals might have given them a little hope, but it’s been downwards since. And that hasn’t reflected well on Jacoby Brissett, starting quarterback for the first five games of the season.

He managed a mere 2 touchdown passes across those five games, and just shy of 140-yards a game on average. It got to the point that he was benched as starting quarterback, with young gun Drake Maye to take over. But there’s no bad blood between the two, if anything Maye is very respectful towards Brissett, and Brissett in turn is almost like a mentor to Maye.

Still, it has to hurt a little, standing on the sidelines, despite whatever Brissett says to the media. And since he’s only with the Patriots on a one-year-contract, he might be busy wondering where he’s off to next. Well, he better think fast, because next thing he knows, he’ll have a football in his hands!

You know how we fans are, we like to have a bit of fun now and then. Maybe a cheeky tease or a little taunt when you catch someone a little offside. Especially when someone reacts on the spur of the moment and you see an unseen side of theirs. So of course all of X, formerly known as Twitter, were quick to jump on the “make Brissett a receiver” train.

What do fans have to say about Brissett’s catch on the sidelines?

Pretty much the moment Jacoby Brissett, standing by on the sidelines, caught a stray pass from Drake Maye, it set everyone going. “I guess we were playing Jacoby Brissett at the wrong position. Bro’s got hands!” one fan said on X. A bevy of similar reactions quickly flooded the platform, Brissett’s the talk of the town right this moment, and it’s not because he’s been benched by the New England Patriots.

One fan spitballed a potential solution that would keep both Brissett and Maye on the field. “Drake Maye —> Jacoby Brissett: the combination we didn’t know we needed on offense #Patriots,” he said. And hey, they seem to get along well, why not? We jest, of course, but it’s a pleasant idea.

One fan took the opportunity to dunk on another Patriots player, Ja’Lynn Polk, saying “Jacoby Brissett has better hands than Polk.” Great things were expected of Polk, who was the 37th overall pick at this year’s draft. But so far, he’s not really had the opportunity to impress, with a mere 78 receiving yards over 6 games and just the one touchdown.

Overall it’s all pleasant ribbing though, even if fans are starting to say Maye should have been the pick from the start. It remains to be seen how the rest of the season will go for the Patriots, and who they’ll stick with.
