Russell Wilson left the Denver Broncos amidst a lot of commotion and joined the Pittsburgh Steelers to be their QB1. Naturally, there are a lot of expectations from the QB as the Steelers let Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph go and put all their eggs in one basket. Pickett found a new home in the Eagles while Mason Rudolph joined the Titans.

Following these major developments, the 6x Pro Bowl Cam Heyward came forward in a segment of Rich Eisen’s show. He laid out the expectations from Russell Wilson in the upcoming NFL season. Heyward has been a proponent of Russell Wilson and has had an influence in his signing with the Steelers.

Jim Jackson of the show started the segment with a simple yet burning question “What does Russell Wilson bring to the table?” The Steelers DT pointed out how the team had problems retaining their quarterbacks. The Steelers traded Rudolph and Pickett. Moreover, Mitch Trubisky was also released. The team has been looking for a QB who can display “leadership” for a long time.

Per Heyward, Wilson is “experienced” with the Super Bowl title to his name. He can be a leading figure for the young offense that the Steelers possess right now. The Pro Bowl DT had faith in Wilson as he mentioned that the veteran QB has a zeal to prove his naysayers wrong.

“We were losing quarterbacks left and right. You know Mason Rudolph had just left; Mitch Trubisky was gone. Um I thought there was going to be a competition there between him and Kenny.” Said Heyward.

The DT added, “But now going forward, um, you just look for the leadership he’s had, a guy who’s been in Seattle who has won games. Won a Super Bowl already um, didn’t have the best time in Denver, but you know, I think he’s a hungry guy who’s ready to prove a lot of people wrong.”

The conversation shifted to how Russell Wilson fits into Mike Tomlin’s scheme of things.

A week ago, the Steeler HC did a presser where he presented his thoughts about the Steelers’ new veteran QB and said that Wilson will have the “pole position” as the QB1 and Justin Fields will have to compete for his spot in the roster. It so happens that Tomlin also thinks that Wilson has the ability to control the team because of his years of experience.

“I just think that provides clarity for all parties involved. Russell is a veteran, man. He’s got a proven process of readiness. He’s been in this league a long time. He’s capable of rallying troops, receivers, tight ends, running backs, et cetera.” Said Tomlin.

He expanded by saying, “He’s just got a lot of experience in terms of what it takes to be the guy over the course of a 12-month calendar and I just think that that’s something that a younger guy like Justin could learn from.”
