The Arizona Cardinals’ quarterback, Kyler Murray, suffered a foot injury in week 5 and then went on to miss three back-to-back games. On Wednesday, November 5, Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon announced that Murray will be placed on injured reserve due to his foot injury. With Murray on injured reserve. This meant the team needed a third quarterback, who has now been added to the practice squad.

The Arizona Cardinals have signed former 49ers player Jeff Driskel to the practice squad. The news of Driskel’s signing was first reported by Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro, and now, an official announcement has been made by the team.

The decision to add Driskel was made in the wake of a recent update on Murray. Unfortunately, it looks like he’s going to miss a minimum of the next four games. Additionally, the decision to add Driskel has enabled the Cardinals to sign a quarterback who is familiar with offensive coordinator Drew Petzing. 

Ever since being drafted to the NFL in 2016, Driskel has bounced around. He started his NFL career with the San Francisco 49ers but was later released during the final roster cut. The very next day, Driskel was with the Cincinnati  Bengals.

Driskel’s first season with the Cardinals was in 2023, when he was put on the practice squad when the Cardinals had Joshua Dobbs, Clayton Tune, and Kyler Murray in the quarterback room. At that time, Murray was in rehab due to his ACL tear from the 2022 NFL season.

Then, in December 2023, the Cleveland Browns signed Driskel off the practice squad. The fans saw Driskel with the Commanders in the 2024 season, and in the current season, he was with the Raiders. From 2018 to 2024, Driskel has been with six teams and has played 25 games.

Although the Cardinals have added Driskel to the practice squad, he is not expected to get any action until an injury. In the meantime, Jacoby Brissett is expected to continue to start for the team as he hopes to keep the Cardinals on par.

Jacoby Brissett is hoping to keep the Cardinals’ offense rolling

Jacoby Brissett has taken charge of the Cardinals’ offense since Week 6. Although he lost his first two games, he has exploded with both his individual and offensive performances, finally breaking the Cardinals’ losing streak as they won their first game after five straight losses.

Under Jacoby Brissett, the Arizona Cardinals have shown real improvement. In his first three starts, the offense averaged 25.7 points and 256.3 passing yards per game. In the last winning game against the Dallas Cowboys, Brissett completed 21 of his 31 passes for 261 yards. His 74-yard march in the game was one of the Cardinals’ key scoring drives in the current season.

Brissett’s exceptional performance hasn’t gone unnoticed. It has received approval from the head coach as well.

“I do like how we’re operating as an offense. In my mind, I take all the variables that I have to make a decision and make the decision when I need to,” Gannon said to the reporters. “I think we’re doing a pretty good job on offense.” 

The head coach spoke about Brissett’s performance after revealing that Murray will be on injured reserve. The addition of Driskel will allow the Cardinals to check their depth if they are faced with an unexpected injury in their quarterback room. Until then, Brissett will continue to take the Cardinals’ offense to new heights until Murray recovers and returns to the squad, as Gannon has made it clear.
