Mike Vrabel replacing Jerod Mayo as the head coach has gotten a pretty mixed reaction from the fans. It was a huge decision and the head coach of the Boston Celtics, Joe Mazzulla also gave his thoughts on the matter. Mazzulla has a great relationship with Mayo which may make him favour him. Many might have missed that Joe has claimed multiple times that he is an NFL fanboy, and he talks about it with Mayo a lot. But now Mazzulla’s friend has been fired and replaced and it appears that he has an unexpected reaction to it.

When one of someone’s buddies is dismissed, he or she is usually upset with the person who replaced their friend. Right? Well, that is not the case with Joe Mazzulla. The basketball coach has said that he feels this is a terrific decision and may be best for the team. Mike Vrabel brings a championship opportunity to the table, and this could be the missing piece of the Patriots’ puzzle.

Mazzulla also argued that every coach is equal in the sports world. And regardless of whether they are in the same arena, they are going to help each other. He explained, “It was great. He obviously brings a championship perspective. You know any time you get together with guys that are in the same arena as we and support each other it’s important.”

This is not all: as Joe Mazzulla also discussed his talks with Vrabel. The man disclosed that both HCs had not sat down for a lengthy conversation before. But both share mutual respect. While this is a great equation between two huge teams’ coaches, it pales in comparison to Mazzulla and Mayo’s bond. They were so close that Mayo even mentioned their relationship in a conference.

There Jerod Mayo stated, “Joe’s been great. I think I told you guys, Joe and I, before he became the head coach, we had a relationship. He would sit in the defensive meetings and we would talk about philosophical things, philosophy. Team sports are team sports. It’s great.” But wait. If the two were this close what was the reaction of Joe when New England decided to part ways with Mayo?

Joe Mazzulla believes that coaches are hired solely to get fired

Sometimes staying cool is all you need to deal with a situation. And this was the case with Joe Mazzulla. While the coach was plainly disappointed by the decision, he couldn’t really complain about it. However, he expressed some worries about not only the head coach but also the assistants and other coaching staff. He claimed that all of those people are always dependent on the HC. And Mayo’s sudden firing would have had an impact on everyone.

Not only that Joe Mazzulla also stated that coaches are hired to get fired. So they need to enjoy whether time they have with a team. The man explained in an interview, “To me, it’s bigger than just the head coach. You have assistants who believe in the head coach. You have assistants who move their families there, so there are people that are impacted by it. Second piece is, like you said, we’re hired to get fired. You enjoy it for as long as you can. After that, it’s done. That’s it.”

Joe Mazzulla’s words demonstrate the reality of the coaching position in all sports. But again nobody can do anything about it because there is no job security in the major leagues.
