Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert pulled off yet another incredible moment in the Week 6 game against the Miami Dolphins. With just 33 seconds left on the clock, he dodged an almost-sack on the second down, shrugged off defenders, and found wide receiver Ladd McConkey for a 42-yard pass in what was the play of the game. Quite understandably, head coach Jim Harbaugh had his mind blown,

“Burned in my mind,” Harbaugh shared. “I’m going to remember that play until they throw dirt on top of me.”

As for Justin Herbert, he was rather modest in his assessment of the play.

“It’s a race against time,” Herbert noted, looking back at the game. “A throwaway is better than a sack, and I was doing my best to just get the ball off. The play before, they played good coverage, got the ball off thankfully, and saved some time.”

Herbert’s play ultimately helped the team win the game as Kicker Cameron Dicker made a 33-yard field goal, sealing a 29–27 win for the Chargers. Not just the coach, but Herbert’s teammates were equally impressed with the QB.

“Kind of see Justin, left, right, switching the ball,” McConkey said about the play. “So, for him to even find me and hit me, amazing play by him.”

Herbert showing strength in the pocket has become a bit of a regularity. Against the Denver Broncos in Week 3, he found a way to shake off defensive end Zach Allen’s sack attempt for a touchdown pass to wide receiver Keenan Allen.

“He reminds me of those big dogs,” tight end Will Dissly shared. “(like) Ben Roethlisberger. The guys that just f-—— wear it and still sling it. He’s a problem. He’s a real problem.”

What is also notable is that Herbert was without the protection of offensive tackles Trey Pipkins and Joe Alt were all sidelined for this game. And the Chargers’ coach was so thrilled with the QB’s performance that he even gave him a new nickname.

Justin Herbert turned mythical for the Chargers

Injuries along the offensive line and back-to-back losses had dampened the early excitement of their 3-0 start. It was a crucial moment for the team to respond, and they did. Snapping their two-game losing streak with a win over the Dolphins, the Chargers now sit at 4–2.

And Harbaugh is over the moon. As per the team beat reporter Kris Rhim, head coach Jim Harbaugh praised the quarterback’s performance and even gave him a new title. “Justin Herbert, he’s like Hercules out there,” Harbaugh said after the game.

He did play like the mythical hero. The 27-year-old completed 29 of 38 passes for 264 yards, two touchdowns, and had zero picks. But it wasn’t just Herbert who stepped up.

Penalties—something that Herbert complained about after the loss to the Washington Commanders—were not that big of a problem this time around. They got flagged 7 times for 45 yards. For a team that gave away 192 yards in penalties over its last two games, that’s a step in the right direction.

The defense picked off Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa three times, including a key interception by cornerback Benjamin St-Juste in the third quarter that set the Chargers up for a touchdown.

Week 7, however, is going to be a much bigger challenge for Jim Harbaugh’s men than what a struggling Miami team was expected to offer. At the SoFi Stadium, they’ll host the Indianapolis Colts, who are 5-1 and sitting atop the AFC South.
