The Kansas City Chiefs enter Week 3 facing a familiar challenge: the absence of a key offensive weapon. Xavier Worthy, the WR who flashed as a playmaker last season, will sit out Sunday’s game against the New York Giants.

Worthy’s return was expected after limited practice reps, but the team officially ruled him out, forcing the Chiefs to adjust on the fly again. And this setback arrives while the Chiefs’ offense is still trying to find its footing under pressure.
As the Chiefs’ official X account shared the update, “We have activated Practice Squad player CB Kevin Knowles via Standard Elevation. WR Xavier Worthy has now been ruled out for Sunday night’s game (shoulder). He will not travel with the team.”

Elevating cornerback Kevin Knowles from the practice squad signals a defensive depth boost, but no direct replacement for Worthy’s explosive presence. Knowles, the rookie UDFA, did log a solo tackle in Week 2’s matchup against the Eagles, but the roster move is a pressing imbalance with receiver options limited.
With suspended WR Rashee Rice out, Worthy’s injury rehab exacerbates the Chiefs’ ongoing offensive struggles, narrowing Patrick Mahomes’ target pool as the Chiefs try to log their first win of the season.

Worthy’s shoulder injury, sustained in a collision with Chiefs TE Travis Kelce during the opener in Brazil, has kept him sidelined despite progress in practice. HC Andy Reid had offered little optimism regarding Worthy’s return, saying, “We’ll see how it goes. I know questions will be [about] Xavier and so on. I’ve just got to see.”
Kelce himself took public ownership of the mishap, stating: “I just got to be better, man. I’m 13 years in the league. There’s no excuse for me running into my own guys like that.”

While the candid acknowledgement does give hope for better performance in the coming game, it doesn’t take the sting away from Mahomes’ limited options going forward. And the quarterback feels this absence the most.
What’s your perspective on:
With Worthy out, can the Chiefs' offense survive another week of struggles against the Giants?
Have an interesting take?
When Worthy showed up for limited practice, a wave of relief swept over the locker room. As Mahomes aptly summed it up recently, “I think more than anything having him out there is just a threat in general. He can, at any moment, take a pass – short of long – he can take it to the house. Having him out on the practice field was very encouraging last week. Obviously, we didn’t know after that injury in Brazil but seeing him out there, he wanted to stay out there. It was kinda like holding him back.”
Worthy’s 59 receptions and 20 carries last season brought the Chiefs 9 touchdowns. He even added a tackle in his 2024 stat sheet for good measure. But with that spark of Week 3 hope extinguished, how will the Chiefs pivot now?
Xavier Worthy’s absence: shifting offensive targets
Worthy’s sidelining reshapes the offenses’ dynamic. His speed and ability to stretch defenses opened lanes for Travis Kelce and others. Without him, Hollywood Brown, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Travis Kelce will face heavier defensive focus. While Mahomes has a proven record for magic under pressure, this shift forces a reconfiguration that could dictate the offense’ success in the coming weeks.
On the other hand, the Chiefs’ run game has also seen a noticeable dip, with former stars pushing for changes. The ripple effects extend beyond just play calls. Chemistry, timing, and Mahomes’ reads all take on added significance as the Chiefs try to gain any edge they can.

Hollywood Brown emerged from Week 1 with 10 catches for 99 yards. Week 3 saw him make 5 catches for 30 yards. But so far, he doesn’t have a TD in his name this season. Meanwhile, Travis Kelce remains the offense’s linchpin.
Defenses will funnel more coverage his way, making each play involving Kelce a potential turning point. Although, to add more worry, this hasn’t been going so well for the Chiefs the last two weeks.
The Chiefs need to design schemes that create favorable matchups for him or risk their passing game becoming too predictable and easier to defend. The roster shift–shoring up the defensive depth–also signals the Chiefs’ emphasis on shoring up coverage units amid a frustrating 0-2 start.
Patrick Mahomes had hoped to have Worthy back in the huddle, but without him, the next man up mantra is tested like never before.

“Hopefully we can go through a good week of practice and have him out there but if not, guys will step up and guys will make plays. I’m just excited to get those guys back and be able to go out there and try to have some success on offense better than we did this last week.”
Ultimately, it all boils down to whether these changes will work against the Giants and beyond. For now, we patiently wait to see what happens under the lights of MetLife Stadium.
