Travis Kelce was frustrated several times throughout the Super Bowl rematch against the Eagles on Sunday. Towards the end of the second quarter, he had had enough. FOX’s cameras captured his emotional outburst after he slammed his helmet and appeared to yell, “I’m sick of this s–t.” The clip was shown right after QB Patrick Mahomes scored on a rushing touchdown and it was unclear what Kelce was upset about.

The Chiefs‘ TE then happened to make a crucial drop that led to an Eagles interception and and a TD on the next drive for Philadelphia. It was clearly a frustrating day and things got worse after the Kansas City team lost 17-20. They are 0-2 currently but Kelce’s outburst caught much of the attention. After the game, HC Andy Reid, who was screamed at by the TE during Super Bowl LVIII, gave more clarity about the incident.
In the post-game conference, Reid stated, “Listen, he’s trying to get guys fired up and going. You know, I mean, that’s him. He’s that way every week if you keep an eye on him. So he’s all in all the time. That’s the way he was today.” The struggling offense, limited quarterback support, and early deficit all got to him in the first half. But slamming his helmet is not new for the Chiefs player.

He had done something similar in 2023 against the Raiders on Christmas. The Chiefs were halfway through their third loss in the last four games when the offense looked shaky. And that’s when Kelce threw his helmet on the turf. Days later, he spoke about it on his ‘New Heights’ podcast with older brother Jason Kelce and expressed how annoyed he was. Yet, he understood he had to keep his cool as as veteran in the team. Even then, Reid had defended his player, saying Kelce went back in to do a nice job.

And if we go back to October 2023 against the Vikings, Kelce had sustained an ankle injury. After testing the injury, he slammed his helmet into the ground due to frustration. So, if history tells us anything, it’s Kelce’s tendency to launch his helmet into the ground.

Travis Kelce’s performance vs the Eagles
His biggest mistake was a potential touchdown pass that slipped away from him in the end zone and was intercepted by safety Andrew Mukuba, who returned it 41 yards before Josh Simmons brought him down. That play altered Kansas City’s winning probability from 53% to 24%. Here’s how it happened: The Chiefs seemed to be gaining grip early in the fourth quarter. Mahomes was getting into a groove and had Kansas City poised to go ahead. But the 14-play, 74-yard drive, which burned more than eight minutes off the clock, did end with Kelce slipping Mahomes’ pass in the end zone.

Reflecting on the missed opportunity, Mahomes shouldered the blame for the timing error. “I threw it a tad too early; if I could put it on his body, he can catch it, take the hit, and get into the end zone,” the quarterback explained. His admission highlighted both the crucial timing element of the play and his unwavering confidence in Kelce’s ability to make difficult catches in traffic. Despite the mistake, Mahomes’ comments underscored his continued faith in the veteran tight end’s capabilities in critical moments.

Kelce ended the game with four receptions for 61 yards and 66.7 catch percent. Overall, the Chiefs seem to be trending downward and are showing a lack of receiver depth. Do you think this downward trend will continue in Week 3 against the New York Giants?
