The Kansas City Chiefs will remember this season as one filled with missed opportunities. After dropping their first two games, they bounced back with two wins and entered Week 5 looking poised for another victory. But it wasn’t to be. A 28-31 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, marked by costly penalties, once again derailed their momentum.

HC Andy Reid knows this better than anyone. The 13 penalties the Chiefs committed were their most in a game this season so far. “We had 13 penalties to their 4,” Reid said in the post-game press conference. “Whether I agree with them or I don’t agree with them, it doesn’t matter.

“They called them. And so, you have that many penalties. You give up field position. You can out-stat them to death, but that doesn’t matter. It’s the score that matters. We have got to take care of business there.”

The Chiefs had their chances to win Monday night, but penalties kept getting in their way. It started early when a questionable offensive pass interference call slowed their first scoring drive. Later in the first half, Chiefs’ cornerback Jaylen Watson was flagged for pass interference, helping the Jaguars set up their first touchdown.

In the second half, things got worse. Watson drew another flag for illegal contact in the third quarter. That extended Jacksonville’s scoring possession.

Also, a holding penalty on tackle Kingsley Suamataia wiped out a big play in the final minute of the third quarter and pushed the Chiefs back 10 yards. On the next drive, more offensive penalties stalled Kansas City again, forcing a punt to start the fourth quarter.

The biggest flag of the night came in the last minute of the game, when safety Chamarri Conner was called for defensive pass interference, putting the Jaguars at the one-yard line. Trevor Lawrence ran it in on the next play for the game-winning touchdown.

In total, the Chiefs’ penalties came at the worst times, erasing big gains, ending drives, and ultimately costing them a winnable game.

Andy Reid’s quarterback burned by another pick-six

In February’s Super Bowl LIX, Eagles rookie Cooper DeJean picked off Mahomes and ran it back for a touchdown. It happened on DeJean’s 22nd birthday and gave the Eagles full control early. They went on to win 40-22, ending Kansas City’s dream of a three-peat.

Then came October 6, 2025, when the Chiefs faced the Jaguars on Monday Night Football. The game was tied 14-14, and Kansas City had the ball inside Jacksonville’s three-yard line, ready to score.

But just when it looked like the Chiefs would take the lead, linebacker Devin Lloyd stepped in front of Mahomes’ pass. And he took off down the field. Lloyd ran 99 yards for a touchdown, the longest pick-six in Jaguars history. He turned what could’ve been a Chiefs touchdown into a 14-point swing.

The home crowd went wild as Jacksonville jumped ahead 21-14. Lloyd, who had already been named AFC Defensive Player of the Month, showcased why the Jaguars’ defense has been one of the league’s best this season. Under coach Liam Coen, the defense has been transformed into a top unit in the NFL.

The Chiefs tried to fight back, but penalties and missed chances hurt them yet again. Next up for them is the Detroit Lions on October 12 at home. Can the Chiefs win this one?
