The history between these two teams adds another layer to Sunday’s game. Back in January, the Chiefs defeated the Bills 32-29 in the AFC Championship at Arrowhead Stadium, denying Buffalo a first Super Bowl appearance since 1994. That heartbreaker still stings for Josh Allen and his teammates, who are eager for payback when Kansas City comes to town.
Buffalo, sitting at 5-2, has bounced back from consecutive losses with a dominant 40-9 win over the
Carolina Panthers in Week 8. That victory came out of their bye week and showed the Bills were ready to get back on track. For that to happen, they know they have to get past the Chiefs. In regular-season play, Allen holds a 4-1 record against
Patrick Mahomes, but when the playoffs roll around, it’s been all Kansas City. Mahomes and the Chiefs are 4-0 against Buffalo in the postseason, including that crushing AFC title game just months ago. The Bills had their last say in November 2024, when they handed the Chiefs a 30-21 defeat at home, ending Kansas City’s bid for a perfect season.Still, the Chiefs remain the team to beat in the AFC. They are set to play in their seventh consecutive AFC Championship game and carry an eight-game postseason winning streak into this matchup. And at the center of Kansas City’s success is QB
Patrick Mahomes, who delivered another stellar performance last week against Washington. He completed 25 of 34 passes for 299 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions. The win over the Commanders marked Kansas City’s ninth straight victory over Washington and its 11th win in the last 12 meetings between the two teams. But even with all that momentum, a moment during Monday’s win sent chills through the Chiefs Kingdom.
Andy Reid rushes to check on Patrick Mahomes after injury scare
The game took a scary turn for Kansas City when Mahomes appeared to be limping after a play. Cameras caught Reid rushing over to check on his quarterback, immediately asking, “Did you hurt your leg?”
Mahomes quickly put his coach’s mind at ease, responding, “Nah, I was celebrating. I was good. You didn’t see? I was doing the Chiefs Wave.”

The Chiefs Wave is a celebration started by wide receiver Xavier Worthy that the rest of the team is fully embracing. Worthy came up with the move after returning from a dislocated shoulder injury in Week 4 against the Baltimore Ravens.
The celebration is a mini dance, usually performed after a big play or touchdown, in which a player extends their arms in front of themselves and shakes their hands up and down at the wrist while pointed forward.
Reid didn’t even respond to Mahomes after he confirmed he was okay, as he seemingly breathed a sigh of relief. The veteran coach walked away without another word, clearly just glad his franchise quarterback wasn’t hurt heading into a crucial game against Buffalo.
A video of the interaction between the two went viral. Mahomes even reacted to the moment by reposting it on X with a series of laughing emojis. The lighthearted exchange showed the close relationship between coach and quarterback, but it also revealed just how much Reid values keeping Mahomes healthy, especially with the Bills coming to town.
