The Kansas City Chiefs‘ trip to EverBank Stadium on Monday night did not turn out as expected. Coming off two wins, the Jacksonville Jaguars kept their winning streak alive with a stunning 31-28 win, their first against the Chiefs since 2009. As for Kansas, they bottled the game despite having an early lead of 14-0 after capitalizing on a goal-line fumble from Trevor Lawrence, but Jacksonville had a comeback in store.

Devin Lloyd’s play flipped the energy inside EverBank Stadium, erasing the Chiefs’ chances of winning. And Trevor Lawrence’s touchdown in the final moment sealed the win for the Jaguars. With this loss, the Jaguars strengthened their chances in the AFC South, while at the same time dealing a setback to Kansas City’s position in the AFC West.

Now, before the KC Chiefs head back home, HC Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes reflect on what went wrong.

“That’s a tough ask because it’s the number one defense in the National Football League we’re playing against,” the Chiefs’ head coach said, referring to the Jaguars’ late-game stand. “We want to make sure we get in the end zone. I have full trust in our defense and special teams to take care of business… I didn’t want to sit there and have to kick a field goal for sure.”

Reid pointed to the final offensive sequence where Trevor Lawrence’s determined scramble sealed the Jaguars’ win. Kansas City’s defensive line had collapsed on that play and nearly sacked Lawrence. The Chiefs had him within reach, but missed tackles from linebacker Nick Bolton and cornerback Trent McDuffie turned a broken play into a game-winning one.

“I thought we had him there,” Reid admitted. “But he’s a competitor. He had a good day running with his legs.”

It was that inability to finish, more than any single mistake, that frustrated Reid. “They just made the plays when they needed to be played,” he added. “We fought hard all game, and it’s just one of them games where you wish you could have it back — but you’ve got to move forward.”

Kansas City was flagged 13 times to Jacksonville’s four, a disparity that repeatedly erased big gains and extended drives for their opponents. “We had 13 penalties, to their 4,” Reid said. “Whether I agree with them, it doesn’t matter. You give up field position, you can out-stat them to death, but it’s the score that matters.”

A questionable offensive pass interference on Rashee Rice slowed Kansas City’s first scoring drive. Later, cornerback Jawaan Taylor’s defensive pass interference helped the Jaguars convert a third down that led to their opening touchdown.

If Reid’s words revealed irritation, Mahomes’ post-game reaction revealed disappointment.

Patrick Mahomes was disappointed after the Week 5 loss

“Obviously sucks, you know, you let a game slip away,” Mahomes said. “Credit to them — they played hard the entire game. They’ve got a lot of good football players and they closed out there at the end. It still sucks whenever you get a lead like that and you’re not able to hold it through the rest of the game.”

Mahomes’ frustration was justified. The Chiefs had dominated early, but their rhythm disintegrated after Lloyd’s pick-six. That interception, a 99-yard heartbreaker, became the night’s defining play. Mahomes explained what went wrong.

“I mean, honestly, they just got me with the coverage that they played,” Mahomes admitted. “They had played zero kind of inside that 10-yard area in previous games and hadn’t shown the poppers with the linebackers. I saw the look and checked to the play with the in-routes, knowing they’d pass off the guys and JuJu [Smith-Schuster] would pop wide open — and he did. But credit to them; they schemed themselves and shut it down. [Lloyd] popped right underneath.”

On the field, Lloyd undercut the route and sprinted the entire length of the field. Mahomes dove at Lloyd’s legs in a desperate attempt to make the tackle, but the linebacker hurdled him effortlessly.

“We’ve lost too many games already,” the 30-year-old QB said later.

Mahomes’ accountability contrasted the frustration around the team but echoed Reid’s sentiment; the Chiefs’ errors weren’t about effort; they were about execution.

As Reid put it best: you can out-stat anyone, but it’s the score that counts. For the Chiefs, that score, 31–28, will linger as the one that slipped away.
