Essentials Inside The Story

  • Justin Fields arrives in Kansas City following a trade from the Jets.
  • The move adds experience and depth to the Chiefs’ quarterback room.
  • Fields brings a chance for a fresh start in a new system.

Kansas City’s insurance policy for a sidelined Patrick Mahomes has officially arrived, and Justin Fields is ready to prove his career is far from over. The Chiefs acquired the former New York Jets quarterback in a move that generated plenty of buzz across the league as they reinforced their quarterback depth heading into the new season.

“What’s up, Chiefs fans?” Fields said in a video posted on X by the Chiefs. “Justin Fields here, out here in Kansas City. Excited to be here; excited to get to work. Let’s go, Chiefs Kingdom.”

The Jets traded Fields to Kansas City in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round draft choice. The trade was contingent on Fields’ physical, which he completed on March 18.

Fields is still under his existing two-year, $40 million contract that he originally signed with the Jets. To make the trade work, the Jets are picking up $7 million of Fields’ $10 million guaranteed salary for 2026. The remainder of that amount, $3 million, is Kansas City’s responsibility per ESPN.

The Jets will pay the remaining $7 million of his guaranteed salary for 2026, leaving the Chiefs with only a $3 million responsibility and no further financial obligations.

Fields’ tenure with the Jets was for one season, after previous stints with the Steelers and Bears. He was originally drafted by the Bears in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Despite being a first-round draft choice, Fields has failed to live up to expectations.

Fields’ recent play has dipped, which may have factored into his departure from the Jets. His best season was in 2022 with the Bears, and he has failed to recreate that since then. In his time with the Jets in the 2025 season, Fields threw for 1,259 passing yards, 7 touchdowns, and a 2-7 record. He was eventually placed on injured reserve, effectively ending his season.

Fields has now become an experienced backup quarterback for Kansas City’s injured quarterback, Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes suffered a torn ACL injury on December 14, 2025, and is looking to return for Week 1, which would be an aggressive recovery timeline.

Until then, Fields is expected to lead the Chiefs’ QB room, with Chris Oladokun and Jake Haener providing depth behind him.

Pat McAfee sees upside in Justin Fields’ trade to the Kansas City Chiefs

While Justin Fields’s performance last season raised some eyebrows, Pat McAfee weighed in on the move. He suggested that bringing in Fields is a strong sign that the Kansas City Chiefs might be preparing to start the season without their three-time Super Bowl MVP, Mahomes.

While Mahomes has been progressing in his recovery and was spotted in public without crutches or a visible brace, McAfee still thinks that his return in Week 1 would be extremely unlikely.

“It would be crazy,” he said.

In comparing Mahomes’ case with other big-name injury recoveries from the league, McAfee pointed out that while elite athletes are used to pushing the limits, there are simply some timelines that are tough to beat. With the uncertainty around Mahomes, he added that Fields gives head coach Andy Reid someone he can work with and develop throughout the season.

“Just like Daniel Jones talks about, his being able to be back for Week 1 is seemingly crazy, but obviously, these guys are incredible workers and incredible athletes,” McAfee said. “Congrats to Justin Fields. We assume Andy Reid will be able to make the most of his abilities and his talents.”

Looking at Fields’ career numbers, he has thrown for 9,039 yards with 52 touchdowns and 32 interceptions across 59 games, while leading his teams to just 16 wins in 53 starts.

“Didn’t necessarily blow up the sheet in any of those types of things. Anytime he has the ball in his hands, and he is running, he is potentially the most athletic person on the field,” McAfee added.

In Kansas City, the physical demands of Andy Reid’s system, which frequently involve mobility and throwing outside the pocket, could be a good fit for Fields’ skill set.
