QB Patrick Mahomes is facing one of the toughest starts of his career. The Kansas City Chiefs, coming off a Super Bowl loss, have stumbled out of the gate with two straight defeats in 2025. “I think after the first few weeks, you let games slip away,” Mahomes said. “We played two good football teams, made mistakes in big moments, stuff that we are not used to doing, but we’re coming together as a team.” Despite appearances, warning signs are emerging after just two games. Patrick Mahomes’ admission that the team is making uncharacteristic mistakes in crucial moments raises red flags for the team. While there’s still ample time to correct course, Kansas City cannot afford to let a 0-2 start become 0-3 with the resilient New York Giants visiting next.

Amid this uncertainty, whispers have emerged of a bold move by head coach Andy Reid. Sources suggest the Chiefs are eyeing 32-year-old veteran wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., a player once considered one of the NFL’s brightest talents. Could this be the shakeup Kansas City needs?

The chatter began on X, where NFL Rumors posted: “NFL RUMORS: #Chiefs reportedly have interest in Odell Beckham Jr. #Chiefskingdom #OBJ.”  Clearly, despite recent struggles, Beckham might get another chance on a big-stage team.

Beckham’s career has been a rollercoaster. Drafted by the Giants, he dazzled with highlight-reel catches and earned three Pro Bowl selections. He moved to the Browns in 2019 and later to the Rams, helping secure a Super Bowl win in 2021. Yet injuries, including a torn ACL in 2022, have slowed him, and his stint with the Dolphins last season produced just nine receptions for 55 yards and no touchdowns, marking the first season of his career without a score.

Before the season started, a parody account impersonating ESPN’s Adam Schefter falsely announced that Beckham Jr. was retiring after 10 seasons in a since-deleted X post. The bogus report circulated briefly before being identified as fraudulent. Still, Beckham remains determined. Reacting to the false tweet, he wrote, “LOL WTF… when was that announced and by whom? That’s funny, appreciate the concerns but this Shxt ain’t over yet,” he wrote on X back in August 2025. However, several NFL teams are monitoring him, and the Chiefs are reportedly among the potential suitors.

Kansas City’s offense has struggled in 2025. They rank 29th in completion percentage and 25th in scoring, averaging only 19 points per game. Mahomes has thrown for 445 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception in the first two games, converting roughly a third of third-down opportunities. Beckham’s veteran presence could provide a reliable target and energize a passing game that has struggled against tough defenses.

Andy Reid has been careful in public remarks. Back in 2022, when the same rumors of OBJ joining the Chiefs were doing the rounds, Reid had said, “I can’t get into all that,” said Reid firmly. “I mean, he’s a heck of a football player, that I can tell you. But in my position, I’m tunneled in on what I’m doing and trying to get the team ready to play with the guys we got,” While he didn’t confirm interest, Reid’s acknowledgment of Beckham’s talent left the door open. And now the rumor mill is buzzing with the same news.

Surprisingly, the timing is critical. Kansas City has lost two straight games while Mahomes navigates the pressure of a struggling offense. A signing like Beckham could shift momentum, boost morale, and give the Chiefs a spark.

Amid Patrick Mahomes’ struggles, the Chiefs’ offense faces growing pains

The Chiefs’ SB rematch against the Eagles highlighted ongoing offensive problems. It all started in the second quarter when the Chiefs took a 10-7 lead over the Super Bowl champions after a rare rushing touchdown from Mahomes. But the offense soon stalled, and the Eagles regained a 13-10 lead midway through the third quarter.

The difficulties continued into the fourth quarter. Mahomes threw an interception at the 13:07 mark on a 10-yard play, which led to a potential Eagles scoring opportunity.  TE Travis Kelce fumbled, and Eagles’ safety Andrew Mukuba returned the ball 41 yards, and only a heads-up play by Josh Simmons prevented a touchdown. Later, Jalen Hurts executed the iconic “Tush Push” play to score a touchdown, followed by a field goal, making it 20-10.

Statistically, the struggle is stark. Kansas City has lost three straight games, if we include the last Super Bowl. Mahomes ranks 29th in completion percentage (58.8%) and 22nd in yards per attempt (6.5). The offense is 25th in scoring (19.0 PPG), and the defense allows 23.5 points per game, ranking 19th in points allowed and 23rd in defensive EPA (-7.1 per 100 snaps). After falling from 10th place to 0-2, questions now loom over whether the Chiefs still dominate the AFC.

Though reflecting on the season so far, Mahomes said, “When you deal with adversity, it’s about how you deal with it. This isn’t how we wanted to start. How are we going to respond? I’m excited for the next few weeks to see who wants to be challenged.” His words underscore the urgency facing both the quarterback and the franchise as they prepare for Week 3.
