The Chiefs are so close to locking in a legendary three-peat, and while Mahomes and Kelce are stealing all the spotlight, it’s Steve Spagnuolo quietly pulling the strings behind their success. Just when it seemed like his head coaching dreams might finally come true, Chris Jones drops some straight facts that could throw a wrench in those plans—for now.
Jones wasn’t holding back, saying, “As long as they continue to let Spags be our defensive coordinator and not hire him as a head coach, we’re going to continue to win.” Basically telling the Chiefs front office—don’t even think about letting Spags bounce. He’s too important to the team’s success, and Jones made it clear he’s not trying to lose him. Spags is straight-up a legend. The guy’s got four Super Bowl rings: one with the Giants (XLII) and three with the Chiefs (LIV, LVII, and LVIII).

In just five seasons with KC, Steve Spagnuolo has helped turn them into straight-up defenses, and they keep stacking those wins. Jones was basically like, ‘Don’t even think about letting him go.’ Honestly, other teams should’ve picked him up way earlier. Back in 2007, Spags was the guy behind the Giants‘ defense that crushed the undefeated Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. His brilliance was clear, but for some reason, other teams slept on him for way too long.
Andy Reid’s seen Spags work up close and knows exactly why he’s the GOAT DC. “It’s not how much you blitz, it’s when you blitz,” Reid said.
Chris Jones also gave Spags major props, saying, “Whether it’s dropping deep and covering a tight end or whether it’s sending a quarterback pressure at the end of the game, that’s what he’s known for. He can dial up different schematics and different blitzes to affect the opposing quarterback, and he does a really, really good job at it.” Jones is basically saying Steve is a magician—he can mess with a QB’s head and dial up that pressure when the game’s on the line.
Even though Spags is out here crushing it, his head coaching dreams are still on hold. Jones made it clear how much Spags means to the defense, sending a shout-out to the front office: ‘Don’t let Spags go.’ He totally deserves another shot at being a head coach, but it looks like KC’s not ready to let him dip just yet.
But yeah, the Jets and Jaguars are keeping an eye on Spags. Both teams reportedly want a defensive-minded head coach, and Spags’ success with the Chiefs has definitely turned some heads. If one of them makes a move, it’s gonna be a tough choice for him.

Should the Chiefs risk losing Spags for a head coach role, or keep their defensive mastermind?
Have an interesting take?
Steve Spagnuolo’s been putting in work for 12 seasons as a defensive coordinator, and since joining the Chiefs in 2019, he’s helped them snag three Super Bowls. His defense always keeps offenses shook with that unpredictable vibe. Like in the divisional round against the Houston Texans, where they sacked C.J. Stroud eight times. Spags just knows when to flip the switch, turning up the pressure when it counts. But for now, he’s all about chasing that next Super Bowl with the Chiefs.
Reid knows what’s up
Steve Spagnuolo’s name has been buzzing in NFL coaching talks for a minute, and it’s no surprise why. As the Chiefs’ defensive mastermind, he’s been shutting down offenses like it’s nothing, with KC ranking in the top five for fewest points allowed this season. Andy Reid, who’s been with Spags for years, is all in on him and thinks he’s long overdue for a head coaching gig.
On The Insiders with NFL Network, Reid just said, calling Spags not just a football genius. But a solid dude who truly gets the game and his players. “I think that’s probably the most important thing. He understands the game, he understands the players. He deserves another shot“. Reid made it clear that Spags deserves just as much credit for the Chiefs’ Super Bowl runs as anyone else. “I’m one of his biggest fans. Other than his sweet wife, I’m probably right next in line,” Reid joked, backing up his guy hard.

Andy Reid knows exactly what makes Spagnuolo’s defense so fire. It’s not just about throwing blitzes every down—it’s about timing. “He does a heck of a job of knowing when to use the different blitzes,” Reid said. Spags is a master at mixing things up, making it impossible for offenses to get comfortable. With him calling the shots, the Chiefs’ defense is a straight-up nightmare for any team that dares to face them.
Reid has been Spags’ biggest supporter from the jump. When the Chiefs were preparing for Super Bowl LV against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Reid said bringing Spagnuolo to Kansas City was “really a no-brainer.” He also called Spags an “energy giver” and a “team guy,” with his teammates clearly having his back. As in Reid’s words “They care a lot about him“. It’s clear Reid believes in Spags, and with that kind of backing, who’s to say he won’t get the chance he deserves?
