Stefon Diggs has never needed much time to make an impression on a new locker room. When he arrived in Buffalo, teammates picked up on the intensity he brought to practice and the chip he carried into each season. New England got a different version of him last year, one returning from an ACL injury and still producing 1,013 yards. Now Washington is getting Diggs at 32, back in the DMV and determined to make the most of what he has called a story he “can’t write a better” version of. But, through it all, there’s been one Diggs introduction that has proved harder to leave behind than the others.

Nearly a decade ago, the Minnesota Vikings asked their players a simple question for 96 Questions: Which teammate would you least want dating your sister? The answers kept circling back to one name, and years later, Harrison Smith was still joking about whether he could give the same answer. Now, with that teammate in a new locker room, Sam Cosmi was asked for his first impression of him, and somehow landed on the same joke.

“I mean, he’s a heck of a ball player,” he told WUSA9’s John Doran. “I mean, from a perspective of media, I wouldn’t let him date my sister. So I don’t know where that came from, the locker room [maybe].”

Diggs, for his part, seemed genuinely amused and slightly offended by the verdict. 

“I’m a great guy,” he insisted at the time. The joke stuck anyway. Years later, when the Vikings looked back at the series, Harrison Smith remembered the episode as the one everyone still talked about, while Jerick McKinnon could only laugh that Diggs was his guy “to the end” before adding, “if you know, you know.” The Vikings’ own retrospective made clear that the players viewed the series as good-natured locker-room ribbing, not an attempt to single Diggs out as a bad teammate. That distinction matters because the joke has taken on a different life outside the locker room.

The old clip has resurfaced repeatedly over the years, including in 2024, when a throwback posted to Reddit drew thousands of upvotes and fans immediately recognized the Diggs segment. The clip had already become a piece of NFL internet lore by then, with viewers debating what exactly his teammates had meant by being so quick to name him. And if it’s any explanation for the joke’s longevity, then well, Diggs’ public romantic life has certainly become more complicated since those Vikings days.

His relationship with Tae Heckard was reported as an on-and-off one beginning around 2018 or 2019, although the exact timeline is difficult to pin down. He has also been linked to several women in less clearly documented relationships, making a definitive list of girlfriends difficult to establish. What is known is that Diggs has children with multiple women, including a daughter with Aileen Lopera. A paternity test confirmed in November 2025 that Diggs was the father of Lopera’s daughter, after she filed a paternity case the previous year.

His relationship with Cardi B became the most public chapter of that part of his life. Rumors surrounding the two surfaced in late 2024 before they went public with their relationship in 2025. They were photographed together at a Knicks-Celtics playoff game in May, later made the relationship public, and welcomed a son in November. By February 2026, reports of a split emerged, with sources pointing to trust issues and describing the relationship as complicated. The two were seen together again afterward, however, leaving their current status less clear than a straightforward breakup would suggest.

His personal life has also produced situations that went well beyond celebrity headlines. In 2024, Diggs became involved in a legal dispute with Mulan Hernandez, with his lawyer describing their relationship as casual. Diggs accused Hernandez of assault and attempted extortion. Hernandez denied those allegations and later accused Diggs of assaulting her and trying to have her sign an NDA. Both sides have disputed the other’s account, so the allegations remain just that and should not be presented as established fact.

Another legal case involving Diggs ended differently. His former private chef, Jamila Adams, accused him of strangulation and assault following a December 2025 dispute. Diggs denied the allegations, and a jury found him not guilty of both charges in May 2026. The allegations have continued to surface in coverage of his move to Washington, but they were not proven in court.

None of that changes what the original Vikings clip was. The players were joking around in a series built around their personalities, and those involved have since spoken about Diggs as a good teammate and friend. Still, the joke has taken on a different weight as the years have gone by. What started with a group of Vikings players immediately agreeing on the teammate they wouldn’t want dating their sisters has followed Diggs long after he left the locker room where it began. Moreover, there is plenty more at stake for Diggs in Washington than an old locker-room reputation. 

He is returning to the area where he grew up after catching 85 passes for 1,013 yards with the New England Patriots in 2025, his sixth career 1,000-yard season. He did it after returning from the ACL injury that ended his 2024 campaign, and he now joins a Commanders offense led by Jayden Daniels and Terry McLaurin.

That is the Diggs Washington ultimately needs: the receiver who can still separate, stretch a defense and give Daniels another established target. The sister joke may have been the first thing Cosmi brought up, but Diggs has a much bigger opportunity in front of him, and this time, he gets to pursue it in the place he calls home.
