The Washington Commanders said Monday that their star signal-caller could miss Week 3 with a knee injury.

Quarterback Jayden Daniels suffered a left knee injury in Thursday’s 27-18 loss at Green Bay, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Daniels was seen grimacing after a hip-drop tackle by Packers defensive lineman Kingsley Enagbare during a scramble with five minutes left in the fourth quarter. Enagbare did not receive the penalty on the play, but Daniels grabbed his left knee repeatedly.

Daniels was seen in the locker room after the game with an ice pack on his knee and had a noticeable limp as he left the building.

He underwent an MRI on Friday, which revealed no major damage, according to team sources.

This could mark Daniels’ first missed start with the Commanders. He previously suffered a rib injury in Week 7 of 2024 against the Carolina Panthers, attempting just two passes before exiting.

Daniels returned in Week 8 and while the effects of the rib injury were still visible, he threw the infamous game-ending Hail Mary touchdown pass to Noah Brown to beat the Chicago Bears.

Unlike the Minnesota Vikings – who will turn to newcomer backup Carson Wentz Week 3 with starter J.J. McCarthy out with a high ankle sprain – the Commanders have a backup well-versed in offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury’s system.

Marcus Mariota went 18 of 23 for 205 yards and two touchdowns after Daniels was injured against Carolina, leading Washington to a 40-7 win. Mariota finished the game with a 132.8 QB rating to go with 11 rushes for 34 yards.

The former Heisman Award winner also played most of the second half of the Commanders’ regular-season finale with the team’s playoff spot locked up. He went 15-18 for 161 yards with three total TDs (two pass, one rush) in a 23-19 win over the division rival Dallas Cowboys.

Mariota was even more impressive against Dallas, with a 141.0 QB rating and 56 rushing yards on just five carries.

Having an extra three days to rest the injury after the Thursday night tilt could help Daniels’ chances. If Daniels sits, Mariota will host one of his former teams, the Las Vegas Raiders, in a 1 p.m. matchup.

The injury is the latest gut punch to the Commanders’ roster after a 2024 season where only one starter missed significant time.

The team lost two starters to season-ending injuries Thursday in Green Bay – running back Austin Ekeler (Achilles) and defensive end Deatrich Wise, Jr.  (quad).

Two other offensive stars, receiver Brown and tight end John Bates, left the Packers game with groin injuries, and cornerback Jonathan Jones left with a hamstring injury.
