The New England Patriots have reportedly decided not to pick up quarterback Mac Jones’ fifth-year option following the 2024 season. While Jones still has one year remaining on his current contract, the Patriots are open to moving him if the right opportunity presents itself.

Jones faced challenges during his third NFL season, including being benched multiple times in favor of Bailey Zappe. His performance saw a decline compared to his rookie year, where he started all 17 games and led the Patriots to the playoffs. In the 2024 season, Jones threw for 2,120 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions with a completion percentage of 64.9%.

Throughout his tenure in the NFL, Jones has worked with three different offensive coordinators. And he will have a fourth in the upcoming season with Bill O’Brien’s departure to Ohio State. This inconsistency in coaching staff may have hindered Jones’ development and progress as a quarterback. The future of two other players is also not so sure.

Fields and Wilson’s future in the balance

The NFL offseason buzz is swirling with speculation, particularly around potential trades involving top draft picks and quarterbacks. According to reports, the Chicago Bears, holding the coveted No. 1 pick, might be considering trading it. This move would likely pave the way for selecting USC’s Caleb Williams, a standout talent expected to make a significant impact in the league. The emergence of Williams could prompt the Bears to explore trading Justin Fields, who has demonstrated promise and leadership during his time with the team.

The Denver Broncos are keeping their options open at quarterback for the upcoming season, including the possibility of revisiting talks with Russell Wilson about restructuring his contract. Head coach Sean Payton emphasized the need for a decision on Wilson’s future “sooner than later” as they prepare for the 2024 NFL draft.
