The Dallas Cowboys‘ offseason has been fairly dormant so far. The Jerry Jones-led team has been criticized for delaying the contract decisions of their key players. One such impending resolution is about their franchise quarterback, Dak Prescott.

The recent Jeremy Fowler report added to the frustration, which revealed that the quarterback’s contract negotiations have been “nonexistent” so far. However, Stephen Jones, the son of owner Jerry Jones, spoke up about the situation, which might provide some relief to the speculations.

Dak Prescott’s contract might “take time”

Prescott is set to enter the last year of his four-year deal and would join the free agency after that with a projected market price of $60 million per year. The three-time Pro Bowl had signed a contract worth $160 million in 2021, and his release would hit Dallas with a cap hit of $55.4 million. So, the natural course for the franchise seems to sign an extension with the QB, saving up on finances and retaining their integral member.

On a recent appearance on Mad Dag Radio, the CEO spoke about the much-speculated future of the team’s signer caller. Stephon Jones explained that Prescott’s contract extension is a “priority” for the team, and deals like these “just take time.” The 30-year-old had his career-best season last year with 36 touchdowns, 410 completions, and 92 yards longest pass completion.

Despite the QB performing his best, Dallas was eliminated from the race to the Lombardi Trophy after a disheartening 48-32 defeat by the Green Bay Packers. Ending with a 12-5 record, the team yet again missed a chance of making it to the championship stage since 1995. This dry spell, along with Jerry Jones’ inactivity this offseason, has considerably dampened the fans’ spirits. However, Jerry’s son remains hopeful of a win in the near future, that too, with the quarterback in question.

Can Prescott lead the Cowboys to the Super Bowl?

Though the question of Prescott’s future after 2024 remains unresolved, Jones emphasized the quarterback’s importance in the team’s machinery. When asked if the CEO is optimistic about the team’s chances of winning the Super Bowl with the 2016 Draft, he replied with a prompt, “Absolutely.”

“I totally think Dak can lead us to a championship. He does everything the right way,” said Jones. He further explained how the Mississippi State product has all the qualities to lead the team from the front and keep the energies of his teammates high. “He’s certainly the leader of this football team. He keeps everybody motivated in the offseason. He’s got everybody working out and doing all the things that it takes to put in the work to give yourself every opportunity to win a championship.”

Jones quoted the team’s back-to-back playoff appearances as “hanging around the rim” in basketball analogy. He feels that the Cowboys just need to pull up their socks to finesse the last leg of their postseasons to finally make it to the big game. “We’ve just gotta go up there and grab it, to use a basketball term, and dunk it in. We’re hanging around the rim. We just got to get the job done.”

Dak Prescott’s contribution to the Dallas Cowboys is realized by fans, the owner, and the CEO alike. The only matter left is to construct a contract agreeable to the quarterback and the team, with hopes of finally breaking into the championship next season.
