The Dallas Cowboys are navigating a tricky Week 5 without full strength, juggling injuries and last-minute changes. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer isn’t wasting time waiting for CeeDee Lamb to heal. A fresh face is about to step in: Jaydon Blue.

With Lamb out and KaVontae Turpin sidelined, Jaydon Blue gets his Cowboys debut as the new kick returner against the New York Jets. As reported by Patrik Walker, “Jaydon Blue makes his #Cowboys debut and in the arctic white uniform. He is expected to help in the return game as well with KaVontae Turpin out.”
It’s a tough spot for a rookie, especially with the offensive line thin and Miles Sanders injured. But Schottenheimer is calling the shots, giving Blue a chance to prove he belongs. And this opportunity wasn’t handed to him. He spent weeks grinding, staying patient, and listening closely to coaching feedback.

“It was a part of the plan. I’m just excited that I finally get to go out there and showcase my skills,” Blue said about his debut. What really stands out is how Blue’s role is already multifaceted. He practiced kick returns extensively and is confident he can deliver.

“I’ve been working back there since I’ve been here, so I’m very confident in my ability to be able to return the ball,” he said. Brian Schottenheimer’s approach with Blue reflects the urgency, but also a clear plan. “They know I have the talent, they know I know what I’m doing. Just go out there and have fun is the message they tell me.”
So for now, the Cowboys lean on Schottenheimer’s quick adjustments to keep things moving forward. But exactly how long will Lamb be sidelined, and when can the team realistically expect him back on the field?

CeeDee Lamb’s injury and return outlook
Lamb’s absence is undeniable; the Cowboys haven’t broken stride yet, but they’re clearly eager for his return. Brian Schottenheimer recently offered some cautious optimism. Lamb’s still on the mend, inching closer but not ready for Week 5. Speaking to the media, Schottenheimer noted, “They’re both moving around good,” referring to Lamb and rookie guard Tyler Booker. “I think the window is getting smaller.”
Lamb injured his ankle in Week 3 against the Chicago Bears, missing two weeks now, which has left Dallas thin in top receiving options. He’s led the Cowboys in receiving yards since 2021, and his return is crucial for the offense’s explosiveness.

The Cowboys leaned heavily on George Pickens against the Green Bay Packers, who delivered big with two touchdowns and 134 yards. Still, there’s a clear gap without Lamb. Dak Prescott’s QBR remain strong (his best since rookie year), but getting Lamb back would turn a good offense into a formidable one.
Brian Schottenheimer’s words hint that both players’ returns are near, but the Cowboys will need patience and careful management. The hope is Lamb’s presence will help the Cowboys sustain their explosive offense over the long haul as they face a tough schedule ahead.
