The Dallas Cowboys’ offense took a terrible hit when star wideout CeeDee Lamb went down with a high-ankle sprain in Week 3. The loss left franchise quarterback Dak Prescott without one of his top weapons and put pressure on George Pickens to step up as WR1. But there’s a fresh buzz in Dallas as Lamb has returned to the practice field, and head coach Brian Schottenheimer’s excitement is clear.
Watch What’s Trending Now!
As Joseph Hoyt reports, “Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb had his first work with Britt Brown during practice today. No noticeable limp of anything as he walked through light rehab work. Brian Schottenheimer excitedly ran over and yelled “uh oh!” multiple times. Cowboys don’t currently plan to put him on IR.” Schottenheimer’s playful reaction was a promising sign that the star receiver is moving towards a quick recovery. The “uh oh!” might just be a jab at the opposing defenses knowing Lamb’s going to be opening up routes and providing targets for Prescott very soon.
Brian Schottenheimer also confirmed recently that Lamb won’t be placed on the IR, sidestepping the usual 4-game absence for such injuries. “CeeDee Lamb is trending in the right direction; currently no plans to place him on IR.” Given Lamb’s role in Dallas’ offense, that’s huge news. His progress is backed by visible signs, like no limp and good movement. If he can return soon, Dallas will have its full offensive strength once again. But is a Week 5 return on the cards?

The Cowboys will head to MetLife Stadium for their Week 5 clash against the New York Jets on October 5. Until then, Lamb’s status is still up in the air. But there’s a spark of hope. As Schottenheimer noted, Lamb (along with offensive guard Tyler Booker) is “Doing good. Progressing well. We’ll see how the week goes.” But what if Lamb takes longer to be fully healthy and back in peak form? Dallas hasn’t waited to fill roles in the receiver corps.

Receiver depth moves beyond CeeDee Lamb
The Cowboys signed veteran wide receiver Paris Campbell to the practice squad. He’s already familiar with Dallas’ schemes from training camp before an injury settlement led to his release. Campbell now competes alongside Jalen Brooks, Traeshon Holden, and Jalen Cropper for reps in Lamb’s absence. But that’s just one of the moves Dallas has made.

Additionally, the Cowboys opened up the practice window for Jonathan Mingo, who started the season on the IR owing to a sprained PCL. He’s got 21 days to practice and be activated to the main roster. If that happens, Mingo could soon bolster the depth at wide receiver, offering relief if further injuries derail the Cowboys’ offense.
This multi-pronged approach has ensured the Cowboys aren’t left scrambling. Even as Lamb’s return remains the focal point, Dallas is prepping for any scenario that might unfold. As the coming weeks unfold, the balance of exciting talent with smart roster management could keep them competitive until their Star is back on the field. How well Dallas handles this transition, we’ll find out. But one thing is for certain: Lamb’s trajectory is setting up a thrilling return to form for Dallas’ high-powered offense.
