After Jerry Jones’ claim to have Micah Parsons in the Week 1 game, the Cowboys faced the Eagles without their defensive end. Many, including Michael Irvin, were shocked by the blockbuster trade and criticized it harshly. It was during the season opener that fans turned their attention to Cris Collinsworth. And many were bewildered by what they were hearing. The reactions were varied and diverse, to say the least.

During the Cowboys vs. Eagles game, the NFL commentator stirred controversy by seemingly defending Jones’ decision to trade Parsons. Even earlier in The Dan Patrick Show, Collinsworth addressed the miscommunication, explaining that the DE had mentioned earlier in the offseason he’d be willing to take less money to stay in Dallas, something Jones seemed to misinterpret. Parsons has been the heart of the Cowboys’ defense, and his departure left major doubts about whether the team could succeed. For fans already upset over the move, Collinsworth’s explanation didn’t do any good. Defending Jones went a little overboard, according to many.

And soon, comments about Collinsworth’s gesture flooded social media. One fan even joked that Jones must have paid the NBC employee to praise him for the trade. “Jerry Jones definitely paid off Cris Collinsworth to defend his Parsons decision lmao Cris is doing tricks on it,” the comment read. And truly, fans didn’t hold back.

And this wasn’t the only reaction. Just minutes before the trade, Irvin went on ESPN, guaranteeing Jones would never let Parsons go. Once the news broke, a shocked Irvin criticized Jones on his YouTube channel and called the move “crazy” and “dumb.” For a player like Parsons, who has posted double-digit sacks every year of his career, Irvin argued the gamble wasn’t worth the risk.

I know he loved Micah Parsons. So in order for us to be right here, something had to go down that hurt Jerry personally to make this crazy, dumb move,” Irvin said. Now, the discussions about Parsons’ contract had been ongoing since 2023, but things soured when he requested a trade early in August. After much back and forth, the Packers acquired him on a four-year, $188 million deal. Moreover, the Packers and Cowboys also have a history.

As the Cowboys battle the Eagles, fans flooded social media to take shots at Collinsworth.

Fans aren’t fond of Cris Collinsworth defending Jerry Jones

With the Eagles taking an early lead in Week 1, frustrated fans zeroed in on Collinsworth’s defense of Jones. One posted, “Is Cris Collinsworth defending Jerry Jones?.” Many drew comparisons between Collinsworth’s praise of Jones and the way he often gushes over Patrick Mahomes. If Patrick Mahomes were to ever become a Cowboy, I’m pretty sure Collinsworth would bust a 🥜 on live television,” another fan wrote.

One fan even took a sarcastic shot at the NBC employee for defending the owner’s decision. “Cris Collinsworth trying to say that trading Micah Parsons was good for Dallas lmaooo,”

“Cris Collinsworth: ‘Actually, Jerry Jones is a genius’,” one fan mocked. The grim reality of the trade is setting in for the fans.

For Dallas supporters, the moment felt like déjà vu. Just months after the Mavericks stunned the city by trading Luka Dončić, another superstar was gone. Things didn’t end well for the Mavericks — what will happen to the Cowboys? But that brings us to exactly why Jones traded Parsons?

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones cited “mathematics” as the driving factor behind the Parsons trade. In a CNBC interview, Jones said Dallas couldn’t justify making Parsons the highest-paid non-quarterback in league history. The trade provided flexibility, draft capital, and salary cap relief that could yield multiple impact players rather than one star. Jones called it a business decision based on value and roster construction, not a reflection on Parsons’ talent. The move drew criticism from fans upset about losing a franchise cornerstone.

This is a move that could reshape the Cowboys’ future, for better or worse. Some fans made it clear. “1st game back and already wanna slap tf outta Cris Collinsworth for glazing Jerry Jones,” another frustrated fan wrote. Jones’ post-trade press conference didn’t help matters either. The Cowboys’ owner repeatedly mispronounced Parsons’ name as “Michael,” a slip many fans and insiders saw as disrespectful given Parsons’ status.

Now, after the Dallas Cowboys, all eyes will be on the Packers and whether Parsons can make the kind of impact that proves Jones wrong.
