The Dallas Cowboys’ 24–16 home loss against the previously winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday led to heavy criticism by fans, especially regarding the team’s defense. The scrutiny has led owner Jerry Jones to make some major changes to the coaching staff. While he didn’t fire current defensive coordinator Christian Parker, he did enforce a seating change for the Cowboys DC. But Parker didn’t seem to agree.

According to The Athletic reporter Jon Machota’s October 15 X post, Parker revealed that he will be coaching from the sidelines during the team’s upcoming matchup against the Green Bay Packers rather than going up to the booth.

“Cowboys DC Christian Parker said he will “most likely” be calling Sunday night’s game from the sideline like he has all season. Jerry Jones said earlier this week that Parker would be moving up to the coaching booth,” Machota wrote on X.

Parker’s comment was echoed by Dallas head coach brian Schottenheimer as well, who also told reporters that the defensive coordinator will likely remain at the sidelines, although the decision was yet to be finalized. Parker also clarified that not going up to the booth wasn’t a dig at Jones. Rather, it gave him a better vantage point to analyze the game.

“When you’re on the field, it’s the direct face to face communication with players and coaches with adjustments and things of that nature,” Parker said. “When you’re up top, obviously you have a wider view and it’s a little calmer up there when it comes to you have desk space, taking notes, kind of looking at the call sheet and things of that nature. There’s advantages to both for sure, but I’ve always been a guy that’s usually been down on the field.”

Dallas’ defense ranked last in the league in 2025 in points allowed, and ranked 30th in yards per game under former defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus. The Cowboys fired Eberflus and brought in Christian Parker as the new defensive coordinator in January 2026 in hopes of fixing the team’s defensive unit.

Parker, having spent the previous two years with the Philadelphia Eagles under Vic Fangio, implemented a modern two-high safety, zone-heavy scheme that the Cowboys hoped would bring an end to their defensive struggles.

However, five games in, the team’s defense is still failing to make an impact on the gridiron. The group seemed to be struggling in terms of execution, and their performance revealed fundamental breakdowns in run-stopping, failing to get off blocks, and poor positioning.

Initially, after the Cowboys’ Week 5 loss to the Buccaneers, Jones called the idea of relieving Parker of his DC duties “premature”. However, he seemed to have changed his mind.

Cowboys’ Latest Coaching Hire Ahead of Week 6

While speaking to 105.3 The Fan, Jones also revealed that the front office has brought former NFL coach Mike Pettine out of retirement to help Parker coach the Cowboys’ defense.

“We’ve made some big headway,” said Jones. “We’ve just this week added Mike Pettine to our coaching staff and that was something that we would have done had we had the opportunity earlier and he’ll be a good addition and working there with coach Parker to uh get this defense going in the right track for the games.”

The front office is likely hoping that Pettine will act as a much-needed veteran presence and a guiding force for Parker, who, as a first-time defensive coordinator, does not have as much experience handling a team’s defensive unit solo.

Whether this latest hire will be enough for the Cowboys’ defense to redeem themselves will only become evident on Sunday, October 18, as they battle the Packers at Lambeau Field.
