Stephen Jones didn’t dodge the subject when asked about Clowney’s status. Cowboys insider Clarence Hill Jr. broke it on X, writing, “Cowboys VP Stephen Jones said the lean is toward ‘Jadeveon Clowney’ not playing this week.” That one line quickly raised questions across Cowboys Nation. But what actually happened that day?

On September 12, Jadeveon Clowney was arrested in Rock Hill after trying to park at Dunbar Place Apartments, a private lot near York County District Three Stadium. Police were there to block nonresidents from parking during a high school football game. Clowney said he was visiting his aunt, but officers didn’t accept it. Things escalated.

Clowney kept interrupting the officer during a trespass warning and refused to show ID when asked. He also didn’t leave the parking lot, instead, he stayed and argued. That led police to arrest him for trespassing and failing to identify. However, the York County Sheriff’s Office later confirmed he wasn’t booked into jail.

Two days after his arrest, the Cowboys signed Jadeveon Clowney to a one-year deal reportedly worth $3.5 million. Jerry Jones announced it right after Dallas’ Week 2 win over the Giants at AT&T Stadium.

The signing quickly shifted attention back to Clowney himself, who soon spoke out about the incident.

Jadeveon Clowney addresses his arrest

Clowney didn’t hide his frustration when speaking about the arrest. He called it a “big misunderstanding.” The 32-year-old explained he was only trying to park at his aunt’s house before going to a high school football game. According to him, the whole thing lasted no more than 20 minutes.

Still, for the Cowboys’ linebacker, this first arrest feels like something he has to fight. He admitted the entire experience was “frustrating.” Then he went a step further and tied it back to his roots.

“If you know anything about South Carolina, where I am from, you know how that can go,” Clowney said, via Clarence Hill. “It’s been going on my whole life down there. It ain’t nothing new. I’m here now. I ain’t even there.”

That comment showed how personal the moment felt to him. Meanwhile, the Cowboys’ leadership didn’t exactly stay in sync.

Before Stephen Jones gave his cautious note, Jerry Jones went on 105.3 The Fan and said he expected Clowney to take some snaps against the Bears. Yet at the same time, Brian Schottenheimer said no decision had been made. That split left Cowboys Nation wondering who was really calling the shots.

Even with all the noise, Clowney insists he is ready. “I’m just looking forward to getting out there and get going,” he said. The player has not practiced since May, when the Panthers released him. So the question remains: when will fans actually see him suit up? For now, the wait continues.
