Troy Aikman was no stranger to criticism during his time as the Cowboys’ signal-caller. After all, a 14-24 record was all he had to show for his first three years with the team. Of course, it was a different story from year four onwards, which saw him bring home three Super Bowls. For Dak Prescott, however, as good as he has been for the franchise, it has been nine years without a Super Bowl or even an NFC championship. Yet, Aikman is not willing to give up on him just yet.

During an interview on 96.7 The Ticket, Aikman praised the current Cowboys starter wholeheartedly. He then revealed his expectations for Prescott and said, “I love Dak. There’s nothing I’d rather see than see him go on and win a Super Bowl and win multiple Super Bowls, and win more than me, and Roger (Staubach) and all of us combined.” That’s great. A veteran hoping for the success of the current generation!
Dak Prescott also took it in his stride and replied on Thursday, September 18, “I got to get going then. I don’t know if I got that many years left. (laughing) I gotta win now.” While he laughed it off, the matter is serious. America’s Team hasn’t even played an NFC Championship game since 1995. This is the 30th year since their last Super Bowl win. Fans are also hoping for a win. So far, they have a 1-1 record after 2 games. Can he take them across the finish line?

In the first 2 weeks, Prescott has performed well. He has 59 of 86 passes (68.6% completion rate) for 549 passing yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. In terms of passing yards alone, he is 5th in the league. But as other QBs in the league catch up, he has to pick up momentum. Most importantly, they have to win the big games. The Cowboys lost the season opener against the Eagles and won the Week 2 game against the NY Giants in overtime. So, it’s time for a convincing win against the Bears in Week 3.
Aikman’s words might inspire him and his teammates to perform at another level. Plus, their relationship is not only limited to football, but extends outside of it as well.
Dak Prescott and Troy Aikman often team up to help the community
While both QBs played in different eras, it hasn’t stopped them from getting together when it comes to doing something for the community. The two quarterbacks were honorary chairs at the 35th Annual Children’s Cancer Fund Gala in April this year, which raised a total of $3 million for children’s cancer research. Aikman, in his 26th year supporting the organization, carried forward the tradition once led by Roger Staubach. Prescott called it a night that “means the world.”
So, if you thought that Aikman’s confidence in Dak Prescott is newly found, you are wrong. He has often publicly supported the current Cowboys signal-caller. Speaking at an event celebrating Dallas as the No. 1 Sports Business City in January last year, the Hall of Fame quarterback backed Prescott despite the postseason doubts swirling around him.
“I still believe in Dak. I feel like until you do it, there are always those criticisms. Peyton Manning heard that his first three years, he didn’t win a playoff game.” Aikman said, comparing Dak’s playoff struggles to Peyton Manning’s early drought.
Aikman’s point is clear. Dak Prescott can still get it done. The regular season isn’t the question anymore. It’s all about January, and the legend thinks Dak is capable of answering.
