The Dallas Cowboys defense just sent a message to the rest of the NFC. With a 44–22 dismantling of the Washington Commanders. Dallas put together one of its most complete defensive performances of the season. Four sacks, two turnovers, and a defensive touchdown. Every level of the defense made its mark, including rookie linebacker Shemar James, who notched his first career sack and forced a fumble on Jayden Daniels.

And just when it looked like things couldn’t get much better, the Cowboys got more good news. Their top linebacker is on the verge of coming back. DeMarvion Overshown, who tore his ACL, MCL, and PCL last season, is officially closing in on a return. The second-year linebacker took to X, posting a simple but powerful update: “T–21”—signaling the start of his 21-day practice window.

The post immediately sent Cowboys fans into a frenzy, as it means the team can now designate him to return from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. Shortly after, CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones confirmed the news: “The Cowboys are ready to open Overshown’s return window. He’ll start practicing this week with sights on a return to play within the next 3 weeks.”

The Cowboys play at the Denver Broncos in Week 8, before their bye week. Following their Week 10 bye, they will head to Las Vegas to face the Raiders. And that’s when DeMarvion Overshown is expected to make his long-awaited return to the 53-man roster. The timing couldn’t be better. The Raiders game offers the perfect chance for Overshown to shake off the rust before Dallas dives into the toughest stretch of its 2025 schedule. A run that could define their season.

That’s why Overshown’s return feels like a turning point. We’ve known this moment was close. Just last week, head coach Brian Schottenheimer hinted the linebacker was nearly ready. “In the next week or two, I would think,” Schottenheimer said. “All signs are pointing to the next week or so, and I know he’s got some very, very good reviews, and so I think we’re getting really close.”

A 2023 third-round pick, Overshown lost his entire rookie year to a torn ACL. But when he finally hit the field in 2024, he reminded everyone why Dallas drafted him. In 13 games, he racked up 90 tackles, five sacks, and four pass breakups. And even an interception returned for a touchdown. Production that turned him into one of the Cowboys’ breakout defenders before the season-ending knee injury cut his rise short. Now, with Dallas sitting at 3-3-1, the defense is trending upward, but another storyline has emerged that caught everyone off guard.

Trevon Diggs suffers freak home accident, leaves Cowboys baffled

Dallas Cowboys Pro Bowl cornerback Trevon Diggs suffered a concussion in an accident at his home on Thursday night. But the circumstances surrounding what exactly happened remain unclear even days later.

When the news first broke, Schottenheimer told reporters the team was still “gathering information.” After the win over the Commanders, Schottenheimer was asked again if there had been any updates. His response was brief: “No, not yet,” Schottenheimer said.

However, Jerry Jones provided a bit more context after the game. The Cowboys owner and general manager revealed that he had personally spoken with Diggs about the incident. But even Jones admitted he wasn’t entirely sure what to make of the explanation. “I don’t know the combination of the injury and how it impacted, regarding concussion issue, I’m not sure that I know the detail of how that happened,” Jones said postgame.

“He said what happened, and I’m not saying that didn’t happen, but a lot of times, you’re not the best viewer of what happened to you. … Yeah, no I won’t get into that [what Diggs said happened], but the bottom line is that I do expect him back.”

While the full story behind the accident remains murky, the good news for Dallas is that Diggs’ concussion isn’t believed to be serious. Jones described the incident as “a fluke situation” and downplayed the likelihood of a lengthy absence. “That was a fluke situation. I’m not expecting Trevon to be out long,” Jones said.

Schottenheimer echoed that optimism, calling himself a “Trevon fan” and saying he’s eager to have his star cornerback back on the field.

Based on team comments, Diggs is expected to return soon. Potentially right around the same time Overshown is activated. If both are back within the next few weeks, Dallas could finally field a near-complete defensive unit for the first time all season.
