There’s something new cooking with the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys won a Super Bowl way back in 1995, before some of us were even born. But it’s not for lack of trying. They have some major talent on both sides of the ball. Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Trevon Diggs are just a few names that add major strength to their roster. They’ve also added 9 new names to their roster from this year’s draft. QB Dak Prescott had a season-ending hamstring injury, he sat on the IR after only 8 games in the last season. He’s still recovering, but it looks like he will at least be able to participate in the OTAs. And we have an injury update on another new star – CB Shavon Revel Jr.

Shavon Revel Jr. hasn’t exactly had a glorious career. First, it was the COVID-19 pandemic, because of which he could not play in his freshman year of 2020. Then in 2021, he only played 6 games. In 2023, he earned the second-team ACC. In 2024, he even returned a 50-yard interception for a TD, but his season ended in injury shortly after that. In September 2024, he tore his ACL and has been on the recovery road ever since. But the Cowboys saw his potential and added him to their roster as their 3rd round, 76th overall pick. Upon being drafted, in an interview, Revel had said, “Everybody’s road ain’t going to be perfect – I have an opportunity. A door opened for me and I got to take it. I got to take it serious.” 

And now, Revel is aiming to get back to the field by August this year, and try his feet in the training camps. Tommy Yarrish, NFL insider for the Dallas Cowboys, took to X to share an update on Shavon Revel Jr.’s injury. Yarrish’s post goes, “Brian Schottenheimer says that #Cowboys CB Shavon Revel Jr. will be limited as he recovers from his ACL injury, but he’s ‘progressing great’ and has been able to work with the team in walkthroughs.” It’s not just HC Brian Schottenheimer. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones has also addressed his injury after the draft, “This is the best medical we got about being ready. In other words, he’s better than the guys that we’re counting on being ready that we’ve got on an injury situation. Feel good about it. Feel very good about it.”

Shavon Revel Jr.’s injury update comes as a big relief, especially since CB Trevon Diggs is also reeling from a season-ending injury himself. The Cowboys’ cornerbacks are riddled with injuries. DaRon Bland is the only CB at this point who’s healthy. Josh Butler is also healing his torn ACL, and Caelen Carson, after his shoulder injury, will be back in form for the 2025 season. But for the Cowboys, it’s not just waiting around for their stars to recover. According to reports, there may be a new addition to the Cowboys in the coming weeks.

Who is Dak Prescott’s new weapon?

A 7-10 record last season knocked the Cowboys out of the park. Dak Prescott’s season-ending injury handed the reins to QBs Cooper Rush and Trey Lance. But these two have gone to different teams for this upcoming season, and the QB only had Prescott and Will Grier before the Cowboys traded for Joe Milton to add to their depth. The Cowboys promoted Grier to the active roster as of January 2025. And Joe ‘Rocket’ Milton certainly gives hope to Prescott’s recovering hamstring. But that’s not all the Cowboys are cooking up.

According to reports, a 4th QB will soon be gracing them with his presence. The Dallas Cowboys’ rookie minicamp at The Star will play host to Donovan Smith (former Houston QB). The undrafted free agent had a rough 2024 season, playing only 9 games with 867 passing yards and 7 TDs (4 passing and 3 rushing). But his 2023 season stats show why the folks at Dallas may be interested in him. In 2023, he had 2801 passing yards and 22 TDs. Add to that 428 rushing yards and 6 rushing TDs, and we’re cooking with a hot stove.

Donovan Smith is 6-foot-6 and weighs 238 pounds. Add to this a swift 4.63s time for a 40-yard dash and a sweet 37-in vertical jump, and the gene pool shows itself quite well. His father is DeAndre Smith, RB coach for the Indianapolis Colts. With Prescott recovering, Smith’s speed and mobility could certainly benefit the Cowboys. But will he make it through the tryouts and catch the team’s eye? We’ll just have to wait and find out.
