The Dallas Cowboys’  44–22 win over the Washington Commanders came without one of their biggest defensive weapons. Cornerback Trevon Diggs was ruled out after an accident, landing him in concussion protocol. After a bizarre silence around the incident, the team owner Jerry Jones finally dropped an update on the players.

Even the owner has yet to meet the player after his concussion protocol, as Ed Werder reported. “Diggs will be paid his game check and expects him to be on field once he clears protocols – as soon as next week,” Werder wrote on X, sharing Jones’ words.

However, Werder shared that he had no further details on the incident. For a long time, owner Stephen Jones and the staff were silent on the matter. The accident that was reported to have taken place at his home was later revealed to the media on Friday (October 17) by Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer.

The coach explained that the player showed concussion symptoms after he arrived at the team facility on Friday. “It’s unfortunate,” Schottenheimer said. “Obviously want what’s best for Trevon. Certainly am wishing him well. But again, next man up.”

The unfortunate injury hit Diggs at the wrong time, when he’s been pulling out all the stops to show his best after suffering an ACL injury back in 2023. That same year, he signed a $97 million extension that keeps him in Dallas through 2028.

It’s also another hit for a Cowboys defense that is already struggling this season. In their loss to the Carolina Panthers, the unit allowed 410 yards on 64 plays. The cracks on defense are hard to ignore. Fortunately, the Cowboys managed to bounce back with a win over the Commanders.

The defense showed some life again in Week 7. While the injury was an unfortunate incident, the head coach admitted that the team must look forward to what lies ahead.

“We’ve got guys that we’re excited about getting a chance to evaluate,” he added. “This is the NFL. If you’re unsure of what is going to happen, just wait, because something is going to happen and you deal with it. You don’t lose sleep over it.”

No wonder the franchise made a few changes for the CB.

How did the Dallas Cowboys manage without Trevon Diggs?

Diggs is one of the crucial pieces for the Cowboys. Without him, the Cowboys used a different approach with more man-to-man coverage and increased their blitzes. And it wasn’t surprising that in his absence, the team made a few changes in the roster too.

Before the game, the team elevated second-year cornerback Caelen Carson. He started the season in IR. And this was after his 21-day practice window opened.

This move wasn’t solely due to Diggs’ injury. As per Todd Archer, the Cowboys had already planned to elevate Carson even before the injury. He has yet to make a major impact, which may be why the team wanted him to step into the role.

On the field, the Cowboys looked sharp with the return of wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. Pairing with quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver George Pickens, Lamb helped lift the offense. Dallas will hope to carry that same energy into Week 8 (October 26) when they face the Denver Broncos.
