Heading into the 2o26 regular season, after failed contract negotiations with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Joey Porter Jr. was marked questionable to play owing to some back issues reported by the cornerback. However, many around the league saw the back issue as just bait since Porter was tired of stalled contract talks and felt disrespected by the organization. Now, just days after his trade to the Dallas Cowboys, there have been some updates to his status which confirm what everyone was assuming.

A report by CBS Sports noted that the cornerback “was listed as a full participant Monday and Tuesday before a limited showing Wednesday resulted in him being ruled out for Week 4. Now that he’s with a different organization, though, he’ll have an immediate chance to suit up with his new team.”
Furthermore, the coaching staff is now evaluating whether the former Penn State standout can jump straight into game action against the Houston Texans. Ahead of the Friday matchup, Dallas HC Brian Schottenheimer also wants Porter to suit up, but his health will obviously play a bigger role in the final decision.
“We’d like him to play, but we’ll see how the week goes.”
ESPN reporter Adam Schefter also indicated that Porter has a strong chance of suiting up on Sunday, adding more uncertainty to his back issues in Pittsburgh.
“There is “a chance” that new Cowboys CB Joey Porter will make his Dallas debut Sunday vs. the Texans, per league source. The Cowboys are going to work to get him ready for Sunday, and need him with their secondary depleted by injury. Porter could go from being ruled out for tonight’s game in Cleveland….to playing Sunday vs. the Texans.”
This availability marks an incredible turnaround from earlier this week in Pittsburgh. Joey Porter Jr. completed full practices on Monday and Tuesday before being listed as limited on Wednesday. The Steelers subsequently ruled him out for Thursday Night Football against the Browns, an abrupt shift that Steelers Radio Network host Gerry Dulac reported accelerated his trade.
Dallas moved in hot to acquire Porter by trading away a 2027 6th-round draft pick and a 2028 2nd-round selection. The Cowboys desperately needed defensive reinforcements after surrendering 34 points in a loss to Baltimore, especially with safety P.J. Locke sidelined due to a torn plantar fascia in his foot.
Shortly after finalizing the move, Porter celebrated on Instagram by writing, “Here I come….. Dallas,” alongside a blue heart emoji. The post notably featured Kenny Rogers’ song “The Gambler,” whose lyrics somewhat align with Porter’s situation.
Porter’s trade ended a prolonged contract standoff in Pittsburgh that began during training camp on the Active/PUP list. Entering the final year of his rookie deal, Porter wanted top-tier money after allowing 0 touchdowns over 1,467 defensive snaps since 2023 and holding opposing QBs to just a 48.3% completion rate in 2025.
Even though Porter leaves Pittsburgh, Dallas has not handed him the long-term contract extension he has been wanting either. Reports confirm that the Cowboys plan to let Porter play out the remainder of his current deal. For them, it’s a prove-it deal, with questions over whether Joey Porter Jr. can bounce back from his back issues.
When asked why he chose this route, Porter added, “It’s really just … bet on myself. You always gotta have that in yourself.”
It remains to be seen whether Joey Porter Jr. will make his debut for America’s Team in Week 4 against the Houston Texans.
