The Dallas Cowboys’ defense is going through a deja vu.

Facing a similar chaos that was last seen in 2020 under Mike Nolan. Back then, Nolan’s lone season as defensive coordinator allowed 6,183 yards and 473 points. A number that seemed catastrophic at the time. Fast forward to 2025, and Matt Eberflus appears to be steering the unit toward an even rougher path in his first season with Dallas.
Much of the pregame discussion leading into Dallas’ Week 3 matchup with the Chicago Bears centered on defensive coordinator Eberflus. The Bears’ former head coach (2022-2024) and how he would manage against his old quarterback Caleb Williams and Williams’ successor Ben Johnson. The result? Williams and Johnson had the last laugh. Chicago rolled to a 31-14 victory, their first win of 2025, leaving Cowboys fans frustrated and furious.

Eberflus’ defense looked disorganized, as ESPN’s Todd Archer pointed out, “In the season-opening loss to the Eagles, the Cowboys gave up one pass play for 25 yards or more. In their past two games, they have given up 12. Seven last week and five against a Bears offense that would not be confused with the high-end units the Cowboys will face as the season goes along.”
Lowest because it is now their worst record in the last 25 years after just 3 weeks. “According to ESPN Research, it’s the most such plays the Cowboys have allowed through three games over the past 25 seasons. And to make it worse, the five touchdown passes allowed of 25 yards or more lead the NFL, too.” Archer added.

The Cowboys failed to record a sack for the first time all season, leaving Caleb Williams untouched in the pocket. This came on the heels of a brutal Week 2 performance against the Giants. When Russell Wilson shredded the defense for 450 yards and three touchdowns on 30-of-41 passing. Heading into the Bears matchup, Dallas ranked 30th in total defense (404 yards per game) and 30.5 points allowed per outing.
No wonder why Jerry Jones is under fire again! His decision to hire Eberflus is not sitting well, as the Cowboys’ defense has bled 1,193 yards and 92 points through three games—putting them on pace for a brutal 6,760 yards and 521 points allowed.
As for HC Brian Schottenheimer, he couldn’t help but watch it all fall apart against the Bears last game. Rome Odunze, Luther Burden III, and D.J. Moore showed how shaky the unit looks.
What’s your perspective on:
Is Jerry Jones' faith in Eberflus misplaced, or can the Cowboys' defense still turn it around?

Jerry Jones continues to believe in the eyes of chaos
Despite the Cowboys’ 31-14 loss to the Chicago Bears, Jerry Jones remains steadfast in his belief that the team can turn things around.
“I think it gets fixed individually. Each person resolves to be more focused on not only their assignment. But what they’re trying to accomplish as a group out there,” Jones explained, underscoring his confidence that the team has “a lot of room for improvement” without being trite.
Schotty echoed the sentiment. He noted that while the Cowboys generated pressure on Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, they couldn’t finish plays. The HC highlighted the long season ahead. As he said, it’s a “17-round fight.” So, correcting mistakes and building confidence are part of the process.
Adding to the hope, newly signed veteran Jadeveon Clowney, inactive against Chicago, should bolster the pass rush in the coming weeks. Giving the Cowboys’ defensive unit a veteran presence that could help stabilize things.

But Jerry’s words continue to steal the spotlight even when the chaos is at its peak. “Jerry Jones said he still fully believes the Cowboys are a playoff team,” Jon Machota reported postgame.
Analysts and even Tom Brady have criticized the lack of coverage and pass rush. But Jones wants the Big D to believe in the team’s talent and resilience. However, the only problem is Dallas will not be giving in to this. The fans have heard it many times.
