The Dallas Cowboys have finally shown their cards, but Jerry Jones isn’t done playing them. With the season already demanding answers and pressure to make the most of the current roster mounting, Dallas made a bold move. And if Cowboys fans thought the blockbuster trade was the end of the action, Jones hinted otherwise.

“Speaking on @1053thefan, Jerry Jones did not rule out making future trades to help the team down the road this season, saying, ‘everything is fluid.’ But the trade for Joey Porter Jr. is a win-now move to the owner and GM. ‘It’s a belief in where we are, what we can do right now,’ Jones said,” Cowboys reporter Todd Archer wrote on X.
The Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager was clear about why the franchise acquired cornerback Joey Porter Jr. from the Pittsburgh Steelers. Todd Archer noted that Dallas is open to adding pieces if the right opportunity presents itself.
That flexibility was available after the Cowboys made a move for Porter. Dallas sent a 2027 sixth-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers for the 26-year-old CB, who immediately became an important piece of a secondary dealing with injuries.
Porter’s arrival also addresses a major issue. Dallas was already 1-2 with injuries in its secondary, including Cobie Durant and Shavon Revel. Porter comes with experience as a starting outside corner. Through his first three NFL seasons, he had recorded 165 tackles, 31 pass breakups, and three INTs in 47 games.
Porter was looking for a new contract of $30 million, which the Steelers were not ready to negotiate. Since he is eligible for free agency in 2027, Dallas will likely have to pay him a large extension.
Porter could even take the field as early as three days from now against the Houston Texans. Patrick Walker and Tommy Yarrish of the Cowboys’ mailbag described Porter trade as an “all-in” type of move, while also pointing out that Dallas still has to prove what the addition means on the field.
And that is where Jones’ “everything is fluid” comment becomes intriguing.
Three weeks ago, Jerry Jones signaled on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas, saying, “really viable, serious room financially to make a trade if we wanted to right now.”
Dallas was willing to sacrifice future draft capital for a meaningful player. The Cowboys’ official site noted that the franchise had been open ot trading a top pick to improve the roster for the present plays.
If any weakness emerges or an opportunity to acquire a difference-maker, the Cowboys have left the door open. Jones has made his belief in the current roster clear. Now, with the season moving forward, Dallas appears prepared to keep exploring ways to strengthen it.
