The Week 5 game day accountability verdicts are out, and the Dallas Cowboys are paying out big money. The league has circled out three names that are paying big chunks out of their wallets. And the biggest fine for a Dallas player has come to cornerback Trevon Diggs.

In their Week 5 clash against the New York Jets, Trevon Diggs got flagged for unnecessary roughness in the fourth quarter. Diggs notably had a faceoff against Jets wideout Arian Smith. Smith had head-butted Diggs, and the Dallas cornerback returned the fire by pushing Smith’s facemask. As the official saw it, Diggs got a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. And that came at a big price.

In the league’s Week 5 accountability release, Diggs’ penalty was listed as ‘unnecessary roughness’. The description: Striking/kicking/tripping/kneeing. With this verdict, Diggs has received a five-figure blow of $12,172. Interestingly, Smith didn’t get fined for head-butting Diggs. But Diggs isn’t the only Cowboy who got fined in Week 5 against the Jets.

Dallas’s offensive tackle Nathan Thomas has also racked up a fine of $4,814 for ‘unsportsmanlike conduct.’ As the Cowboys landed a touchdown with just 19 seconds left in the second quarter, Thomas celebrated the score with an outburst of pelvic thrusts facing the Jets’ end zone. With that score, the Cowboys led 23-3 heading into the second half. But Thomas’ celebration now takes a chunk out of his pocket.

And the biggest fine of them all had already been decided days before the verdict on the players came out. Forget five-figure fines, GM Jerry Jones received a six-figure fine to cap off Dallas’ 37-22 win over the Jets.

Jerry Jones’ costly Week 5 mistake

With less than five minutes left in the game, Jerry Jones went viral for flipping the bird at a fan. Franchise quarterback Dak Prescott had just logged his fourth and last touchdown of the game, giving Dallas a 37-14 lead. As Jones’ gesture got captured on camera, many believed it was intended for a Jets fan. But as Jones clarified later, it was just an honest mistake. Speaking on 105.3 The Fan, JJ noted:

“That was unfortunate. That kind of an exchange with our fans out in front of us. There was a swarm of Cowboys fans out in front – not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. – [the gesture] was inadvertent on my part because that was right after we made our last touchdown, and we were all excited about it. … I just put up the wrong show on the hand. … If you want to call it accidental, you can call it accidental. But it got straightened around pretty quick. … the intention was ‘thumbs up,’ and basically pointing at our fans because everybody was jumping up and down excited.” Accidental or not, that gesture cost Jones quite a lot.

The league slapped a whopping $250,000 fine on him. While many believed he might make an appeal against it, Jones decided against it. As Jon Machota reported,

“The league fine money goes to charity, which Jones is happy to support. He’s also confident that fans know how much he appreciates all fans, not just Cowboys fans.”

With that, Jerry Jones is now $250K lighter. Moving forward, as the cameras zoom in on him during critical moments, JJ might just keep a better check on his gestures now. After all, another accidental wrong finger could blow a bigger hole in his wallet.
