On Friday, word broke that Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs had some kind of accident at his house Thursday night. Bad enough that he ended up with a concussion and will be sidelined against the Washington Commanders. The strange part? Nobody seems to actually know what happened. Not the front office, not the coaching staff, not even Stephen Jones himself.

When asked about the whole thing, Stephen Jones didn’t offer much of anything. He said he had no comment about Diggs missing Sunday’s game. And that’s only made the situation weirder. The Cowboys brass, from top to bottom, apparently aren’t getting any real answers about what went down.

Brian Schottenheimer tried to shed some light on it, but his comments didn’t exactly clear the air. “Trevon Diggs came in this morning with some concussion symptoms after having an accident at his home,” he said. “He’s been checked out by our doctors and is in the protocol and will miss the game.”

Naturally, fans were hoping Jerry or Stephen Jones might fill in the blanks, but Jerry (who has an opinion on everything) has been unusually quiet. And Stephen’s low-key approach isn’t helping anyone feel better about the mystery.

This whole episode is just pouring fuel on an already tense relationship between Diggs and Cowboys fans. A lot of people in Cowboys Nation are frustrated, feeling like the two-time Pro Bowler hasn’t lived up to his massive $97 million deal. Between injuries and absences, patience is wearing thin.

Remember, Diggs tore his ACL in practice back on September 21, 2023, after only two games that season. Since then, he’s suited up for just 17 of the Cowboys’ last 39 games. And that’s including playoffs. That’s 43.5% availability. And over those 17 games (almost one season worth), he’s posted only two interceptions and 11 passes defended.

So while the relationship between the Cowboys fans and the corner has reached its lowest, the trade speculation is louder than it’s ever been.

Trevon Diggs’ trade speculations intensify

With the 2025 NFL trade deadline right around the corner, Cowboys fans are already calling for help at cornerback. Injuries and inconsistent play have hit that position hard this year, and after the latest Diggs situation, a lot of fans sound ready to move on. And there’s more to it.

Adding more fuel to the fire, Diggs reportedly listed his $4 million Dallas home for sale a few months ago, per Kelsi Karruli of Realtor.com. The timing feels a little too convenient to ignore.

If a trade really is coming, it sounds like the team’s already preparing. Schottenheimer said he’s confident in fourth-year corner Kaiir Elam stepping up.

“A lot of confidence,” Schottenheimer said. “Kaiir’s biggest thing is trusting in what he sees. There’s time in man-to-man and in zone where he’ll play a little bit soft. As a secondary unit, we need to all get better at our stick awareness.”

Given everything that’s happened, from Diggs choosing to rehab his ACL away from the Cowboys’ medical staff in 2023 to that $500,000 that he was stripped of for doing the same thing in 2024, maybe this is the right thing. With his guaranteed money set to expire this season and a defense struggling to stay competitive, the writing may be on the wall for Diggs in Dallas. The November 4 trade deadline looms as a potential turning point, and if owner Jerry Jones can find a willing trade partner, Diggs could be on the move before the month is out.

It’s hard not to feel like this partnership is hanging by a thread. Maybe at this point, a clean break would be best for both sides.
