Jerry Jones already wishes for an “all-in” plan. However, there have been rumors and talks among the fans and media about Dak Prescott’s contract extension. With many analysts assuming uncertainty about it, a former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver stated several reasons Prescott was significant for the franchise.

In 2024, Prescott’s cap hit is anticipated to be $59.45 million. This includes a $29 million base and a $5 million roster bonus due on the fifth day of the league year. But as he enters his final year of the contract, the QB is confident about his extension. Believing in him is Cowboys ex-player and Super Bowl champion Keyshawn Johnson.

In a recent episode of the UNDISPUTED, Keyshawn Johnson joined Dallas fan Skip Bayless to discuss the Cowboys and Prescott’s contract talks. Johnson mentioned that all these conversations and rumors “at the combine you hear, are a lot of noise and a lot of whispers and a lot of chatter.” He emphasized that despite some discussions and opinions about Prescott’s contract being too expensive, Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones have expressed a desire to secure a deal with Prescott.

Johnson cautioned, “It would be a mistake, Skip, a major mistake, because if you let him play this out in 59 point something million dollar cap number… and he goes on and nothing suggests that he’s going to have a lesser season than he’s had over the last several seasons.” The two-time All-American standout at USC argued that Prescott’s performance and value are likely to improve, and if the Cowboys don’t secure a deal now, they might face a much higher financial demand from Prescott in the future. He underscored Prescott’s status as one of the top quarterbacks in the league. He warned that letting him go would be a missed opportunity for the Cowboys, potentially benefiting another team.

The 51-year-old said, “I don’t care how you rank it. It ain’t going ahead of Patrick Mahomes, but I don’t care if you want to put him at two, three, four, five, if you want to take Justin Herbert before him, whatever the case is, the man deserve his money. He’s going to take you to the cleaners next offseason if you don’t do it now, or he’s going to walk and then you going to be sitting sitting there going we just let our quarterback that we drafted, develop for somebody else….. he’s not at the end where he’s all mushy, no! He’s right at that peak in his career.”

What has Jerry Jones thought about Dak Prescott?

The Cowboys are considering an extension for Dak Prescott, which could significantly reduce his cap number. However, the negotiation process for Prescott’s current contract, a four-year, $160 million deal signed in 2021, took almost two years. This deal includes clauses that prevent the Cowboys from using the franchise tag on him in 2025, and he also has a no-trade clause. Prescott might hit the open market next year without an extension, and the inability to use the franchise tag, and the Cowboys can’t guarantee he will stay with them.

However, during the combine event’s press conference last week, Jerry Jones said, “What we do there or don’t do [with Prescott’s contract], I couldn’t say at this time, but the main thing is he’s going to be our quarterback.” The franchise can create around $18 million in cap space without extending Prescott, but it would increase his dead money to approximately $58 million.

Jones concluded, “Well, because I have gotten my mind on being better than we were last year. And that’s where the focus would be. Every player you got has some time when his contract is up. You would walk around with the shakes if you feared it. You can’t because they all come up. They all can get hurt. They all can lose some talent. So all of that is not fear.
