At some point, Mike McCarthy was on the brink of getting sacked. The Dallas CowboysGreen Bay Packers game concluded, and McCarthy became a subject of hate and apprehension. However, it’s still hard to sway Jerry Jones’ trust in Mike McCarthy. The owner posted a statement justifying why he hasn’t decided on firing the Head Coach in exchange for a new one. Now, McCarthy has come forward with more clarification on the matter.

He had a meeting with Jerry Jones and allegedly fought for his job at the Dallas Cowboys. It is to be noted that this is his last year with the Cowboys, per their contract agreement. So, Jerry Jones decided to show mercy and give him one more chance, a chance to at least win a post-season game. A drought that the Cowboys haven’t been able to overcome for more than two decades.

The Cowboys’ HC appeared in the presser after he had a 3-hour-long meeting with Jerry Jones. McCarthy told the media that he had a conversation with Jones about a lot of “topics”, and one of them was the post-season loss and how the season ended so abruptly for the Cowboys. Per the HC, there were “layers” to their disappointment. He didn’t expose exactly what the disappointment was about, apart from the loss to the Packers.

One of the focal points of their conversation was the staff and coaching personnel. The Cowboys expect some hiring, firing, and adjustment in the player’s contracts, including Mike McCarthy’s. As pointed out earlier, this is McCarthy’s last year with the Cowboys. However, after the Cowboys were ousted from the post-season, there wasn’t much room left for McCarthy to renegotiate the terms of his contract.

Still, the management needed “direction” from the coach after he oversaw a “50-0 football disaster” of a playoff loss. While the 3-long conversation sounds like a “job interview”, it’s not only his job that McCarthy has to be concerned about.

What bothers Mike McCarthy?

Mike McCarthy also mentioned that in his twenty years in the league, he has never discussed the contracts of players or coaches and he is not going to start doing it now. Despite this, the Cowboys HC seems pretty confident about the team going forward and his tenure with the Cowboys. Professionally, Mike McCarthy is dealing with the problems with poise, but personally, there might be some emotions involved after the season ended.

Following the season-ending game, McCarthy had to sit with each player individually and talk about their future. The emotional part is that he already has said goodbye to some of them, or he might have to in the future. The dissipating Cowboys “family” is reason enough to put him in a minor emotional crunch.

“Continuity” and “stability” were the words in this conversation. McCarthy’s “Texas Coast Offense” indeed led the NFL in scoring and featuring an MVP performance from Dak Prescott. While all that happened, a 12-5 season for the Cowboys under McCarthy is a third straight. For now, he is persevering.

One take at a time

Basketball has stuck with me ever since I was a kid. I remember watching Kobe Bryant sometime in 2008 and being blown away. Like every kid my age, I was utterly taken aback by his moves and abilities as an athlete.
