NFL is one of the most watched television in America for several years now. And the Super Bowl draws in even more audiences. But this year’s Super Bowl clash between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers gained ratings close to the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969.

Every year some superstars contest for the Lombardi Trophy. This year was no different with stars like Patrick Mahomes and Brock Purdy on either side. So, what set the event of Super Bowl LVIII apart from the rest?

The moon landing back in 1969 averaged 125-150 million viewers on their screens. And for more than half a century, no other television programming came close to it. Until this year’s Super Bowl! Estimated to be watched by 123.4 million viewers, most since the moon landing.

There are several on and off-the-field requisites that the Super Bowl fulfilled. This created a ton of hype for the event. And this hype translated well into the number of people tuning in. The Super Bowl was available to be watched on television and on streaming. This bridged a gap between the generations.

The game also went into the OT, where Mahomes shone the brightest. Only the second time in its history, a Super Bowl was won in the OT. Usher’s halftime show was expected to be electric, which brought on several other viewers. But could the astronomical numbers be because of another pop icon?

Traditionally, the Super Bowl attracts between 108-115 million viewers every year. But there was one thing that was different for this year, a phenomenon that brought a new demographic to the footballing world. And it was the effect of 14X Grammy-winning Taylor Swift.

Swift’s relationship with the Chiefs’ Travis Kelce has been talked about all season long. And it delivered on the final day of the postseason. With millions of viewers tuning in to get a glimpse of Swift and possibly her man winning the Super Bowl. And they weren’t disappointed in either case.
