Travis Clayton, who plays for Basingstoke in Counties 2 Hampshire, found himself eligible for the NFL Draft after just 10 weeks of learning the NFL. He is being touted as a potential signing for one of the 32 NFL franchises.

He may not have played a single minute of American football, but his journey is one of hope and determination. Before, he participated in a variety of sports, including soccer, tennis, and boxing. Despite starting in the eighth tier of English club rugby, Clayton’s participation in the NFL’s International Player Pathway (IPP) program has opened doors for him.

Reflecting on his journey, Clayton said in a recent interview, “I was part of the NFL academy back in 2019, the first phase of people they made the academy for. Some things didn’t work out along the way, but luckily for me, I still kept in contact with the coaches and personnel, and I’ve been given this great opportunity in the last two years.”

As he awaits the outcome of the NFL Draft, he acknowledges feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness and remains optimistic about his prospects. He expressed his eagerness to push himself to the limit and embrace the challenges that lie ahead. He further remarked, “I’ve only trained in pads out on the field since January, but in regards to actual playing football, I’ve never played a single minute.” His statement showcases his confidence and hope. He also said that he hopes everything goes well, and he gets drafted later in this afternoon.

However, Clayton’s combination of size and athleticism has captured the attention of teams and coaches.

Views on Clayton: A mix of admiration and high expectations

As per Cam Prayag, Clayton is a “physical and athletic freak,” noting his remarkable strength and speed. “Being a big guy, I’d say I’m quite quick,” he says. “Quite agile on my toes for someone who weighs over 300lbs. I think that should make me stand out.”

James Cook, head of the International Player Pathway (IPP) program, confirms Clayton’s ability to turn heads, noting the “significant interest” he has attracted from NFL teams. This interest has led to invites from top franchises like Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Cleveland, and Kansas City. “We’re hoping his name gets called this weekend,” says Cook. “If it doesn’t, we feel very confident he’ll go in and sign as an undrafted free agent.”
