The Washington Commanders have the 2 overall pick in the upcoming draft while the New England Patriots maintain a 3 overall pick. The competition is fierce and there’s a question of who’s picking who making rounds in the NFL world. The Bears unequivocally seem committed to choosing Caleb Williams, per all the conversations happening in the league. All that’s left to see is where other QBs like Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels fit in the puzzle.

A couple of analysts at NFL Network started a debate about where Jayden Daniels might land next. While some of the things might not be in the LSU QB’s hands, a journalist on the panel tried to make a case for Daniels joining the Commanders and had some meaningful insights about the matter.

One of the hosts started a debate about what would be a better pick for the QB, the Commanders or the Patriots. The host said that Daniels played 55 games as a starter and is a dual-threat playmaker. Meaning, that his running game is equally as vicious as his passing game. The host added how in the past Kliff Kingsbury has been largely successful with dual-threat QBs like Kyler Murray.

“The Washington Commanders are a better fit for Jayden Daniels and a lot of it stems from the fact that Jayden Daniels comes with 55 games under his belt as a starter. He also is a dual-threat playmaker. We’ve seen Kliff Kingsbury have success with athletic quarterbacks. Kyler Murray, the No. 1 overall pick in Arizona, at Texas A&M with Johnny Menziel,” said Bucky Brooks.

He also added, “When you think about the fit between a play-caller and a playmaker, I can’t think of a better one than Kliff Kingsbury being able to coach a guy that can impact the game not only as a passer but as a runner. I think that really makes the difference between the two situations.”

While matters seem like a simple open-and-shut case, things are much more complicated than that. The main factor remains of several things making more of a case for Dan Quinn, the Commanders’ HC to choose Drake Maye over the LSU phenom.

The flipside to Commanders’ draft

On one occasion, it was pointed out that although Jayden Daniels is a prodigy, he is riskier in the sense that he is more injury-prone, which got him benched on a couple of occasions by his college side as well. Though Daniels has a wingspan and a run game to show for it, we cannot ignore Drake Maye’s abilities to read plays and drop dimes.

The North Carolina QB had 8,018 yards and 63 touchdowns in just 3 seasons he played. What’s surprising is that in those three seasons, his first one was as good as negligible, amounting to 89 yards and a TD. Daniels has been playing college ball for 5 seasons, while Maye has been at it for 3.

Also, their rushing games have been quite similar on paper. The quality of plays might differ, but the numbers are essentially the same. All that’s left is to wait for the draft and see how the puzzle unfolds.
