Ever since NBCUniversal launched its streaming platform Peacock in 2020, the NBCUniversal-owned subsidiary has been facing massive losses. Even Peacock TV was able to gain over 3 million subscribers during July-September last year while streaming the Paris Olympics. Still, the giant streaming service lost $436 million in the 2nd quarter, compared to a massive $639 million loss in the first quarter. Interestingly, NBCUniversal has another mega event lined up for next year.
Although not Peacock TV, NBC—another subsidiary owned by NBCUniversal—holds the broadcasting rights of Super Bowl LX. Now, while NBCUniversal is gearing up for the biggest event of 2026, the multi-billion-dollar broadcast giant has faced a major blow. Now, it’s not that there is no positive side to this recurring loss. In Q1 2025 alone, Peacock TV generated $1.2 billion, a 16% increase from last year’s quarter. The Comcast-owned streaming service also increased its subscriber base to a whopping 41 million by March 2025. But despite such a massive revenue, they still managed to lose $215 million in the first quarter of this year.
Mike Cavanagh, the Comcast president, also expects Peacock TV to become profitable. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Cavanagh said, “I do expect Peacock to be on a continuing trend of driving towards improved monetization, bigger scale and therefore declining losses over time.” If you look at the overall revenue of the media conglomerate for the first quarter of 2025, Comcast recorded a massive $29.08 billion, however, not too less than its previous year’s number—$30.05 billion. But here is the shocker: Comcast’s net revenue circled down to $3.37 billion, 12.5% down from last year’s $3.85 billion.

Acknowledging the concern, Comcast CEO Brian L. Roberts admitted the growing challenges ahead of the much-anticipated Super Bowl LX. “We’re clearly facing some challenges. But … with a lot of passion, the team has a sense of urgency and energy and focus to getting customer pain points resolved. I really like our strategy, our balance sheet strength, regardless of global uncertainty. I feel we have a fantastic and unique company, and I’m quite optimistic,” Roberts said.
On the bright side, their adjusted earnings per share (EPS) went up by 4.5% to $1.09, so it’s not all doom and gloom. And if things do not go south, the Super Bowl next year may bring some more bright news to Comcast, because apart from NBC, NBCUniversal will also stream the mega event on their loss-making streaming service Peacock TV, and to ensure top-notch coverage, the media giant has enlisted two veteran broadcasters to lead the event.
Mike Tirico and Cris Collinsworth to cover Super Bowl next year
The Super Bowl LIX was historic in ever freaking way–except for the Chiefs failed attempt to finish the historic three-peat. Anyway, the biggest showdown of the 2024 season marked the first time the game was broadcast in both English and Spanish on Fox and Fox Deportes, with streaming available via Tubi and NFL+. The event generated a record-breaking 127.7 million views across platforms, making it the most-watched Super Bowl in history.

And of course, who can forget Kendrick Lamar’s half-time show that generated roughly 133.5 million views, surpassing Michael Jackson’s 1993 performance as the most-watched halftime show in U.S. history. To top that off, we saw the return of Tom Brady in the Super Bowl—not as a quarterback leading the Patriots (or Bucs), but as a Fox analyst. And now?

Well, the early speculations are suggesting that NBC’s two of the best broadcasters, Cris Collinsworth and Mike Tirico, are set to cover Super Bowl LX on February 8, 2026. For Tirico, let’s just say, the man’s going to have a busy schedule in February next year. The reason? Well, besides the Super Bowl, Tirico will also serve as the host of NBC’s prime time Olympics coverage during the Milano Cortina Winter Games, and he has also been named the lead NBA play-by-play announcer for NBC and Peacock starting this fall.
As for Collinsworth, NBC is projected to keep him to cover at least two Super Bowls. Collinsworth is expected to sign a four-year contract extension with NBC. As per The Athletic, the extension will keep him through the 2029-30 season. Considering NBC is set to cover Super Bowl LX in 2026 and Super Bowl LXIV in 2030, Mike Tirico and Cris Collinsworth are expected to man the booth in both seasons.
