Shedeur Sanders’ agonizing NFL draft experience took a bizarre turn on Friday. After a first round snub, Shedeur had to sit through the same ordeal in the second and third. But that was not the cruelest highlight of the day. It was what happened during a live Twitch stream when Shedeur received a call from Saints GM Mickey Loomis, supposedly. The family gathered around Shedeur in a second as the caller responded, “It’s been a long wait, man. We’re going to take you with our next pick right here.” But an uncharacteristic waiver of a response—that Shedeur has to “wait a little longer”—quickly de-escalated their excitement to utter confusion before the stream was abruptly cut off. Defeated, it only later hit him that nobody had that number to be able to prank call him. Surely, that’s hitting below the belt!

Shedeur not being picked in the first round was a big enough deal for President Donald Trump to weigh in and share his thoughts. “What is wrong with NFL owners, are they STUPID?…He should be “picked” IMMEDIATELY by a team that wants to WIN. Good luck Shedeur, and say hello to your wonderful father!” he wrote on his Truth Social platform, hours before Day 2 of the Draft. Shedeur was touted to be the top QB pick in the 2025 class, but several teams in desperate need of a quarterback passed on him.

The Giants picked Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart at 25, and the Saints opted for Louisville’s Tyler Shough in the second round, 40th overall. Still, there was hope that teams like the Browns, Saints, or Raiders would finally make the move. But when Seattle picked another popular prospect, QB Jalen Milroe at 92, and Cleveland picked Dillon Gabriel at 94? Yeah, those two raised a few eyebrows. While Shedeur grapples with his future, he has found some support.

Patrick Mahomes took to X and said what most people were thinking: “Crazy.” One fan even joked, “Tell Andy Reid to draft him as Mr. Irrelevant tomorrow.” Now that would be wild and interesting if it happens. Bills safety Terrell Burgess also tweeted, “They trippin now,” after Shedeur went undrafted in round 3. Meanwhile, former NFL linebacker turned TV host Emmanuel Acho also didn’t hide his disappointment.

Acho was so shocked, he walked out of dinner just to speak about it. He said, “Shedeur Sanders not getting drafted in the first three rounds? It’s disgusting.” And he wasn’t just talking pride. He was talking about reality. Acho’s been there, watching quarterbacks at work from close quarters in the league, and he knows how this works.

First-rounders? They get patience. They get time. But a fourth-rounder? You mess up once, and you’re gone. That’s the harsh part. That’s what’s not sitting right with Acho.

He added, “When you’re a backup quarterback, you are much more easily discarded. If you’re going to get drafted in the fourth round or later, you are being drafted to be a backup. Think about the quarterbacks drafted after the third round that are currently starting or potentially have the opportunity to start.

Along with this, he brought up names like Dak Prescott and Brock Purdy – guys who only got their chance because someone else got hurt. That’s the brutal truth. Shedeur Sanders not going earlier doesn’t just sting, it puts his whole NFL future on a thinner line. His window to prove himself just got way smaller. “If you get drafted after the third round, you do not have an opportunity to start, barring an unforeseen injury,” Acho explained. But why is Shedeue, a heavily touted prospect, being left out?

Braggarts aren’t good for team unity. Hype doesn’t throw the ball or win games. Sheduer and Deion are...more

Shedeur is a deep ball threat, no doubt about it. But among league scouts, there’s a quieter consensus: his arm strength and accuracy are solid, just not special. On shorter throws, the ball sometimes flutters out of his hand, a flaw that showed up even during his pro day. For teams that rely heavily on quick, precision timing routes, that inconsistency raises real red flags. Add to that the fact that Shedeur doesn’t offer much as a running threat, and it’s clear why some front offices might have been hesitant to take the gamble early.

Another reason why Shedeur finds himself looking from the outside might be his pre-draft interviews.

The consensus among NFL evaluators regarding Shedeur Sanders’ pre-draft interviews was notably mixed, with several reports indicating concerns about his demeanor and professionalism during team meetings. According to NFL insider Josina Anderson, a quarterbacks coach from a team drafting in the top seven described Shedeur as “brash” and “arrogant” during their interview, a sentiment that was reportedly shared among other league personnel. Similarly, NFL draft analyst Todd McShay reported that high-ranking individuals from two teams in the top 10 were “unimpressed” with Shedeur, feeling he lacked a professional approach and seemed indifferent to their evaluations.

Still, seeing him sliding through the first three rounds without finding an NFL home is surprising.  In fact, Stephen A. Smith didn’t hold back either. He tweeted, “This is a damn disgrace. How in the hell is @Shedeur not off the board, not drafted yet?” Then there’s Brett Favre. The Hall of Famer shared a throwback of his own draft moment. In that featured photo, the young Brett is seen on the phone, and loved ones are cheering behind him.

He kept it real, perhaps sending a message to Shedeur to not be disappointed: “Heck I didn’t care when I got drafted, I just wanted a team to give me a chance wherever I went. It’s what you do when your # is called that matters, not when you were taken. On top of that, the team that drafted me didn’t even want me (laughing emoji).”

Well, Favre did prove himself in the league. That’s the reason he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2016. But for Shedeur? Ah, the man just needs one opportunity. But will he get it? Especially after Cleveland’s puzzling choice?

Cleveland’s QB choice over Shedeur was a surprise

For two straight nights, Shedeur Sanders sat and waited. Name after name, pick after pick, still nothing. Then came Cleveland’s pick (94th overall) on DAY 2. Fans held their breath. But the Browns didn’t just skip Shedeur again… they stunned everyone. They picked Dillon Gabriel – A 24-year-old, 5’11” quarterback who bounced between three schools. No one literally no one, had him ranked above Shedeur. It felt like a gut punch.

We all know that the Browns needed a future QB with their aging, injury-prone roster. And Shedeur was once projected to go second overall. Yet here he is, still waiting. Gabriel? He was barely even in the next tier. But Cleveland leaned on his long college résumé, solid stats, and a good Senior Bowl showing. During his Ducks tenure, he completed 72.9% of his passes for 3,857 yards, 30 touchdowns, and six interceptions. Due to this, he finished third in Heisman voting. So, the Browns ignored the height, the age, all of it. But what triggered GM Andrew Berry to go with Gabriel, and not Shedeur?

During a press conference later, Berry stated, “Decorated college career, very accurate, very poised, throws with the anticipation, good mobility. We just thought he had a really well-rounded game. The biggest negative that you say about him is that he doesn’t have the ideal height, but that’s not something that we felt like showed up in his game. We really felt strongly about Dillon throughout this process….he’s a really strong, really good prospect. We think he’s an excellent player.

Meanwhile, Shedeur Sanders, taller, stronger, and with better numbers, kept slipping. The league clearly sees something they don’t like in him. But man, after watching this free fall, it’s hard not to wonder what’s really going on. The Browns could’ve played it safe. Instead, they tricked. Maybe it’ll work out. But passing on the Colorado star? That might haunt them!
