The Kansas City Chiefs have let Tommy Townsend go and hired Matt Araiza as their new punter. The former Bills punter, who was born and raised in San Diego, California, and played college football for the San Diego State University, will be active in the Chiefs’ roster in the upcoming season.
Araiza was a placekicker in the nascent stages of his career and set the school record with the most completed field goals (22-26). After that, he was drafted by the Buffalo Bills as the 180th in the sixth round. Later, he turned free agent after a short time with the Bills, and now, he’s with the Chiefs. Much of his personal life, including his love life, is veiled, but we shall look into it.

Very little about him exists online. By the looks of it, he is single right now. Often, celebrities and athletes reveal little to no information about their private lives; this could be one of those cases. His Instagram account boasts 37.6k followers, and it consists only of football-related photos.
He is nicknamed the “Punt God” because of his powerful legs. He set an NCAA record for the most average yards per punt at 51.9 after beating Texas A&M’s Braden Mann’s record of 2018 (50.98). But he didn’t like the nickname given to him in the first place.

“To be honest, I don’t necessarily love the nickname. I understand it’s a huge compliment, I think it’s a little bit too much,” he said. Despite his modesty, he is not short of any accolades either.

In 2021, he was dubbed mid-season All-American for his punting duties in his redshirt year with the Aztecs football team. He was also named the best punter in the country and won the Ray Guy Award before joining the Buffalo Bills. He also excelled at Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Year and is a First-team All-MWC.
He signed a four-year, $3,876,148 contract with the Bills in 2022. The former Bills punter went through tough times and was axed from the Bills roster. After jumping through many hoops, he stayed focused on football and finally signed with the Kansas City Chiefs.
“I am thrilled to be able to continue my NFL career,” Araiza said in a statement. “I want to thank my family, who have been my rock, and my many friends who have been unwavering in their support. I am proud and honored to sign a contract with the Chiefs.”
