Miami Dolphins tight end Darren Waller had a change of heart after an explosive comeback against the New York Jets. His career has been a roller coaster, marked by injury, a loss of passion for football, and retirement. Now, he is back doing what he loves. Following his performance, Waller wants to keep the door open for a possible return next season.

After an electrifying performance on the field, he candidly shared the fear and pressure he felt before the game. But it was the game that changed his views and boosted his confidence. “There’s doubt, there’s fear,” Waller shared on The Night Cap.
“Like, did I even make the right decision coming back? But then having, like, a night like Monday, it’s like, well, wait. Like, this feels like there’s still, like, plenty left here. Maybe there is something more in the future.”

Waller had two touchdowns in the game, helping the Dolphins lead. Looking back at his performance, he sees it as the beginning of a new chapter.

“I don’t want to say I’m done,” Waller declared. “This is just one chapter, because, you know, I don’t really know. Every time I thought I had my life figured out in which direction it should go, I feel like God has flipped the script and been like, no, we’re going this way now. Because I was set on not playing football ever again, but it’s like, here I am. So I’m trying to just remain open.”
This is one huge transformation for the player, who retired back on June 9, 2024, following his injuries and anxiety. He didn’t feel ready to return. And that is when he began “meditating” on this. “I was kind of feeling it pull me back,” he recalled. “And I was like, ‘I don’t know I thought I was done for real.’ But I guess I kind of let God steer the wheel.”
Things changed quickly for Waller. After he came back from retirement, the New York Giants traded him to the Dolphins. But he got entangled in another injury. He missed most of training camp and the Dolphins’ first three regular-season games due to his hip injury. Cut to the present, the TE is just as shocked as the entire crowd at the Hard Rock Stadium. But Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel is not.
“I knew he was fully capable,” McDaniel said. “I just didn’t want to overcook it. It inspires me, and I think it inspires his teammates … all he’s done is everything that he possibly can do and put his best foot forward, and he has been a phenomenal contributor to our team.”

The coach’s praise didn’t just come from the player’s experience of nearly four years with the Baltimore Ravens, but also from his performance in practice. And that same confidence and energy was translated into this game, too.
Darren Waller’s thrilling comeback is making waves
Waller felt he was done with football. But the new challenges became hope. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa had thrown the ball high on purpose because a defender was right on Waller’s side and another was coming fast. And the TE stretched to grab the ball with both of his feet in bounds.
“That first touchdown, I can’t remember the last time I’ve thrown the ball to dang near the goalposts and somebody catches it like that,” Tua said. “That’s the kind of guy that we have in Darren Waller.” The QB is awestruck by the Georgia Tech product.
This was the first time since 2020 that the TE recorded a second touchdown reception in a single game. He finished with three catches for 27 yards. This was his first and best performance since his last game with the Giants on January 7, 2024. After the touchdown, he felt confident that his decision to continue playing was the right one. He found the joy of playing football again.
“I feel like I’m right where I’m supposed to be,” he said. “I guess nights like the other night made me feel like it was the right choice.”
Whether it is an indication of how far Waller could go or just a glimpse of what’s to come, it was an incredible performance, and the Dolphins hope to carry this momentum into their next game.
