The Miami Dolphins quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, has had his fair share of injuries in the 2025 NFL season. He was even limited in Wednesday’s practice due to hip and left thumb injuries. But he didn’t miss any of last week’s game against the Carolina Panthers. Now, we have an update on his injury and his status for the Week 6 game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

“Mike McDaniel was asked if Tua Tagovailoa is starting Sunday vs the Chargers: “Yeah.” This news was posted by Dolphins reporter Marcel Louis-Jacques on his X account. Even before McDaniels’ confirmation, Offensive coordinator Frank Smith said on Thursday that Tagovailoa’s current injury is not that severe. Although no confirmation was provided, it was a clear implication was made that Tagovalioa will be available for the upcoming games through the offensive coordinator’s statements.
“We’re working through the process to Sunday,” OC Smith said, “but I mean, we’re not anticipating any setback for him for playing on Sunday.” Is this the first time QB has been injured? Certainly not.

Back in 2024, Tagovailoa missed the final two games at the end of the season because of a hip injury, which he suffered in Miami’s 20-12 loss to the Houston Texans. But the hip issue dates back to 2019, when he had it surgically repaired during his last season at the University of Alabama.

Tagovailoa also suffered a thumb injury in his left hand on Sunday while playing against the Panthers. This could become an issue as the QB is left-handed. Although everything looks fine as of now, since he will not miss the upcoming games. It will be interesting to see whether these two injuries affect Tagovailoa’s performance, as he has been excellent on the field.
Tagovailoa has excelled despite the Dolphins’ struggle
Dolphins have been struggling throughout the season and are currently at 1-4. But despite the team’s struggle, Tagovailoa has been steady on the field. By week 5 of the current season, Tagovailoa already has 10 touchdowns, which is tied for third in the NFL. Three of these touchdowns came in the last game against the Carolina Panthers.
In the entire season, he has thrown for 1,008 passing yards, has 4 interceptions, and has a 70.7% completion rate. He also has an excellent passing rate of 100.1. Keeping in mind all these stats, Tagovailoa’s unavailability could have been a big blow for the Dolphins, which doesn’t look like a case after McDaniel’s confirmation.
With the Dolphins sitting at 1–4, keeping Tagovailoa healthy and on the field is crucial if they hope to revive their season. The team must have analyzed Tagovailoa’s status, and only then have they confirmed his availability, as Tagovailoa worsening his injury is the last thing McDaniel would wish for against the Chargers.
