A few weeks into the season, you expect teams to settle into a sort of equilibrium. The majority of teams will have won some games and lost some, and they’d have learned some lessons along the way. There’s two notable outliers going into Week 5. First, the seemingly unstoppable Minnesota Vikings, on a 5 game win streak with no losses. And then there’s the Jacksonville Jaguars. 4 games in, with not a win to their name, they drag their heads in shame.

Jordan Schultz has revealed that he’s had first-hand reports from players that the locker room simply does not have any faith in head coach Doug Pederson anymore. This comes after his comments, blaming players for the failure of the team rather than taking on responsibility himself or pointing to play callers.

At this point, Doug Pederson’s fate is uncertain, but it does depend on the Jags’ owner, Shahid Khan. If you’ve heard 2 things about Khan (especially recently), it’s that he’s filthy rich and that he’s patient. The one time he’d had to step in was brought up – the case of Urban Meyer. Meyer’s run with the Jags was as disastrous as it was short. He coached for only 13 games in 2021, leading the Jags to a dismal 2-11 record. But his on-field failures weren’t the reason for his dismissal. His behavior with the players is what got him the boot. Meyer used to repeatedly kick Jags kicker Josh Lambo in the leg, despite constant warnings. When this was finally made public, Shahid Khan acted promptly to fire him.

Pederson’s comments pinning the blame on the players don’t come anywhere near what Meyer did, of course. But he’ll have to watch himself. He needs to have his players on his side. He earned a lot of goodwill during his first two successful years. It’d be a shame to squander all that now.

How does Pederson break the Jags out of this funk?

Speaking about the Jacksonville Jaguars problems, Colin Cowherd offered a simple solution – win more games. Well, you could say that’s easier said than done. But it’s like Cowherd says, “Winning solves a lot of issues.” They might have a chance at it against the Colts, though they are fearsome foes.

He has to stop blaming his players and take on responsibility himself. Pederson was hired to guide these young men towards a common goal, and it’s his responsibility to see them get there. The Jags have simply not been able to lock down their offensive line, especially under Trevor Lawrence. They’ve lost 9 consecutive games under his leadership.

We’re not saying the answer’s to get him out of there, but if even experimentation’s not brought improvement, what can they even do? Wholesale change seems to be the need of the hour, but mid-season’s a terrible time for that. It remains to be seen how things go. Here’s hoping Pederson can save his bacon.
