Just before the Nov. 4 trade deadline, the Philadelphia Eagles made a surprise move to strengthen their defense. They got cornerback Michael Carter II and a 2027 seventh-round pick from the New York Jets, sending wide receiver John Metchie and a 2027 sixth-rounder in return. The twist? Carter reportedly gave up over a million dollars in guaranteed money to make the deal happen.

“Here’s how badly Michael Carter II wanted to join the champs: Sources say he agreed to delete the $5M guaranteed for injury in his 2026 contract year to complete the trade to the Eagles,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on X.
Carter’s rookie deal was worth $3.8 million, and his growth earned him a three-year, $30.75 million extension last year with $13.61 million guaranteed. Yet, despite that cushion, he was willing to walk away from part of it for a fresh start in Philly.

After the deal went through, Carter’s message to Jets fans was pure class. “New York, I’m forever grateful! You changed my life 💚 so much love to all my dawgs in the building. Greatness is on the way.”

Before this big shift, Carter had built a solid career in New York. Drafted in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, he quickly became a key piece of Gang Green’s defense. He played all over the field: corner, nickel, you name it.
In 65 games, Carter stacked up 223 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 26 passes defended, three fumble recoveries, two interceptions, and one forced fumble. Impressive numbers. Now, the big question: can his selfless move pay off for the Eagles’ future?
Is Michael Carter II the fix Philly needs?
While the Eagles’ defense has looked sharp up front, the secondary has been a different story. The team needed help in coverage after having to release Darius Slay and losing Isaiah Rodgers in free agency. So, the front office pulled the trigger and brought in Michael Carter II to stabilize the back end.

So far this season, Carter has suited up in five games and started four. He’s quietly done his job, two passes defended, 14 total tackles, and just eight completions allowed on 12 targets.
The outside corner spot opposite Quinyon Mitchell has been shaky all year. Neither Adoree’ Jackson nor Kelee Ringo has locked it down. Now, with Carter in town, that competition just got real.
But here’s the thing: Carter’s presence also gives defensive coordinator Vic Fangio the freedom to shift Cooper DeJean to a full-time outside corner role.
In the big picture, this trade feels like a win. The Eagles gave up only a late 2027 pick to land a proven defender. It’s a low-risk, high-reward move that could reshape the secondary. For now, it’s all eyes on Carter, and how his arrival could finally shake things up for the Eagles.
