The Kansas City Chiefs arrived at Arrowhead Stadium full of confidence. After all, it was a chance to bounce back and show the world they still had what it takes to chase another Super Bowl. Plus, it was a Super Bowl rematch against the defending champs, the Philadelphia Eagles. However, things didn’t go as planned. Instead of celebrating a home win, Chiefs fans watched Patrick Mahomes and co. fall short. The Eagles stole the show, edging out a 20-17 victory and moving to 2-0 for the season. Meanwhile, frustration boiled over for the Chiefs’ players.

Defensive tackle Chris Jones couldn’t hide his temper. As the game wrapped up, Jones shouted directly at Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, “You don’t even have 100 yards.” Interestingly, the stat sheet said otherwise, but emotions clearly got the better of Jones. Hurts didn’t let it slide. Instead, he shot back calmly, “We won the f—ing game.” At the end of the day, that’s all the response anyone needed.

And if you check the numbers, Jalen Hurts completed 15 of 22 passes for 101 yards, no touchdowns or interceptions, and rushed nine times for 15 yards plus a touchdown. Enough to get the job done. However, Hurts hasn’t thrown a touchdown pass (or interception) through his first two starts of 2025. Yet, the Eagles are undefeated.

Interestingly, before the game, Jones spoke confidently to the media about their strategy to stop Jalen Hurts. “Just our lanes and rushing the passer. Gotta be aggressive on rushing the passer, more aggressive than we was the first game of the season. We’re gonna put that behind us. And we got a lot, a lot of skillset guys in our room, that we got to be aggressive in rushing the passer and make sure we take the quarterback down,” Jones said.

Still, that plan didn’t work. In fact, it backfired. And, the Chiefs’ head coach feels he could have done better.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid took the blame for the loss

The Kansas City Chiefs now sit at 0-2 after a rough Sunday showing. Head coach Andy Reid didn’t waste time in owning up to the mess. “I’ll take full responsibility for that game,” Reid said, via Chiefs beat reporter Sam McDowell of the Kansas City Star.

Not only that, Reid stepped up and shouldered the weight. He pointed to flaws in the coaching game plan as the real culprit. His honesty stood out. While he’s determined to learn from the mistakes and get better, he’s also not happy with the refs.

Meanwhile, Mahomes put in a decent effort despite the loss. He completed 16 of 29 passes for 187 yards, threw one touchdown, and suffered one costly interception. On top of that, Mahomes rushed seven times for 66 yards and even scored a rushing touchdown. His performance wasn’t spectacular, but it wasn’t the reason for the defeat. Even with a costly turnover in the fourth quarter—when his pass to Travis Kelce came up short in the red zone—it wouldn’t be fair to pin the blame solely on Mahomes.

Next up, the Chiefs will face the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium in Week 3. It’s not exactly a must-win, but starting the season 0-3 wouldn’t sit well in the City of Fountains. Reid and his squad know that. They’ll aim to right the ship.
