The Philadelphia Eagles are 4-0 in the season after defeating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. But it appears that not everyone is happy in the Eagles’ camp after the win. Despite the victory, it was yet another quiet week for the wide receiver AJ Brown.

He caught just 2 passes for 7 yards in the entire game. After having a good third week against the Los Angeles Rams with catching six passes for 109 yards, the wideout has managed only 8 catches for 41 yards combined in the other three weeks.
With an unimpressive performance yesterday, Brown was seen frustrated, which he also displayed with his recent tweet. He posted a Bible quote on X, “If you’re not welcomed, not listened to quietly withdraw. Don’t make a scene. Shrug your shoulders and be on your way.”

This clearly signals his limited role throughout the season. But experts have a split opinion here. While Brown stresses how he did not get action against the Bucs, former WR Antonio Brown (AB) spoke unfavorably of him. “AJ Brown has 14 catches all season. Puka Nacua has 13 catches today,” he posted on X.

Referring to the Rams WR Nakua, who has performed outstandingly this season, AB highlights how, in only his three seasons, he has arguably established himself as one of the best receivers in football. His most exceptional performance came against the Colts, where he managed to catch 13 passes for 170 yards.
Nakua has become the league’s third player to register at least 8 catches in the first 4 games after Eric Moulds in 2002 and T.J. Houshmandzadeh in 2007. This includes 10,11, and 13 catches in three out of his 4 games.
Unlike Nakua’s consistent performances that kept him on the roster, Brown has been with the Eagles despite his sloppy performances and cryptic messages. During the 2023 season, Brown deleted a tweet mentioning his route progression and still lack of targets. My route become a (LOG) route which means (For the love of the game). Which also means I’m not getting the ball,” he wrote earlier.
AJ Brown’s cryptic message
In the immediate aftermath of the victory over the Bucs, Brown posted the tweet related to his role in the Eagles. He has been stating that he is not valued in the team. His quote shows his dissatisfaction with how the team is considering him as a future contributor. Brown has led the Eagles in total targets in all three of his seasons with them. However, the dynamics changed when he wasn’t targeted in the first half at all in the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys this year.
There, Brown’s presence on the field was seen during the Eagles’ final drive, where he caught an 8-yard pass. This set Jalen Hurts for a game-winning first down run in third and 1. But Hurts targeted most of his previous 22 passes to other receivers like Dallas Goedert, DeVonta Smith, Jahan Dotson, Kylen Granson, and Saquon Barkley. He rarely targeted his 28-year-old weapon in that match.

However, Hurts tried to get the ball to Brown plenty of times on Sunday, and he now has 27 targets in his last three games. Still, the veteran wideout’s yardage total is a new season low and his second single-digit yardage figure over the first four games.
That leaves us to the question: Is he eyeing a potential trade? Or is he just trying to cover up for his shaky performance this season? Well, Brown still has an opportunity to snap out of his disappointing stint in the season in the tough week 5 matchup. The Broncos‘ challenging secondary comes to the town next Sunday afternoon.
